Babies: 3 - 6 Months

do you have bumpers on if your baby moves around?

we took ours off when DS started moving around, but twice now he's rolled over fast and banged his head on the slats and freaked out crying (we have a breathable bumper on now but obviously there isn't any padding). i was debating putting the bumpers back on.....

but my debate is: a little head bump is better than potential suffocation....but really how bad are bumpers? sooooo many people have used them for years and years with no issues.

what are you doing about this?

ETA: i also know this is sooo a third tri question but i just didn't imagine how hard DS could be hitting his head!

  • we are only going to use the breathable bumper.  there is no way i can blatantly ignore our pedi and every other professional opinion regarding bumpers.

  • We have a bumper on our crib. I know this is sooo debatable. LO loves hanging onto the rails and has gotten her arm caught in the rails quite a few times. It was my choice to put the bumper back in.

FWIW- BRU sells breathable bumpers in many colors.

This exactly. DD moves around a lot and quite a few times I've found her with her head smooshed (is that a word?) up against the side of the crib. She wouldn't have been able to breathe with a regular bumper on. I'm not willing to take the risk.

When we were younger, our parents also didn't have to use car seats and they all swore that nothing happened to the babies. Are you thinking of ignoring that advice too? ;)

yeah, yeah, i know....that is why i have a breathable one on :) i just hate seeing DS scream after banging his head so hard i've been second guessing myself!

Totally this. I don't see a single legitimate reason to use anything other than a breathable bumper.

  • we used the bumper that came with her bedding until she started moving around - i thought about taking it out completely, but realized there was a potential for her to get an arm or leg stuck in the rails so we have been using the breathable bumper ever since.  she hasn't whacked her noggin yet so i'm not sure what we'll do if that happens......

This is not a reason to use one if you choose to do so.

It probably just scares him more than it hurts him at this age.

ETA: I have a breathable one that I have not put on yet.

  • I was wondering the same thing. Just the other day I took mine off, but she rolls around so much she bumps her head and her legs poke through the slats.  So I started rolling up recieving blankets and lying one on either side of her so she stays put a little better.  So far, so good, but I just started that two days ago. HTH.

we do have a breathable bumper if you want to try that....at least it keeps the legs from going thru the slats (since having blankets in the bed is just as debatable as having bumpers too)
