Anyone tether a rear-facing carseat?

So we just got a Britax Boulevard...and I've done some research on Car-seat.org, etc., about using the rear-facing tether. We have the seat on the right rear side of our Toyota RAV4 (the center seat position renders all the seatbelts in the back seat unreachable). So anyway, the only way to use the rear tether is to install it "Australian style", with the straps coming over the top of the seat, and wrapped around the back of the seat to the tethor anchor.

Since there is no one "standard" opinion about rear-facing tethers, I was curious about other people's choices regarding whether or not to tether, if you have that option on your carseat. TIA!

  • Why is that your only option? Attach the D-ring that came with it to the passenger seat (underneath the seat, you'll find a spot), and hook the tether there.

  • I do tether.  I had the firestation guys put it in for me just to be safe.
  • I wanted to, but I couldn't figure out where to anchor it at the floor behind the passenger seat.  We have it on the rear passenger side, as well.

  • Oh, and on the link I posted--do not follow the instructions for installing the swedish method that uses the tether spot under the seat where the carseat is located. It is outdated and not safe.
  • Well, I went by the Toyota manual for my car, and the only three tethor anchor points are in the rear of the car.

Are you talking about tethering it to the front passenger seat?

Thanks.  I've seen this site, but I have a Britax Diplomat which isn't mentioned here.  The manual says rear facing tethering is ok, but there is honestly no spot under my front passenger seat for the D Ring.  The seat is automatic and anywhere I might be able to loop the strap through would interfere with the front seat movement.

  • The police installed my Roundabout and Roundabout 50.  They are both tethered.

    Yes. It's okay.

  • Before you go running to the fire station to have your car seat tethered, PLEASE contact your car dealership first to make sure your particular model was made to be used with a tethered seat. My dad works for Toyota and sees MANY cars come through the service department with the carseat tethered to the back of the passenger seat, and the frames are just not made for it. Some cars are designed to withhold the tethered seat, and some aren't The fire station won't know which is which - so contact your dealership first.

This is ridiculous and not true at all. Please don't go to the fire station, though. They tethered a non-tetherable seat one time. Find a reputable CPST. https://www.safekidsweb.org/events/events.asp
