XP: Please Help - Congested Baby

I really need some advice.

My LO is has a congested nose. She's never been sick before.

Last night was absolutely horrible. She didn't fall asleep until 2am (I put her down at 9pm) then she was up again by 4am and pretty much up and down constantly until 8:30am this morning.

I put her in the swing to get some sleep b/c I could tell she was exhausted. She fell right asleep then woke up a few minutes later coughing. She then threw up. Which is even more terrible considering how long it took her to get any milk in her belly between gasping for air.

I've used the bulb aspirator on her (doesn't help much) and have been trying to keep her upright.

PLEASE, PLEASE tell me what I can do for her so she can sleep and get better.

(You may see this post multiple times / multiple boards b/c I am genuinely desperate for help. Also, please don't say "Call the Pedi" b/c my DH just got a new job after being laid off and health ins. hasn't kicked in yet.)

  • Do you have a cool mist humidifier? That did wonders for DS when he was sick. You could also try steaming up the bathroom with the shower and standing in there for a while with her.  I hope she feels better soon!

This was going to be my suggestion.  You can also put Vicks Vapor Rub on their feet.  Vicks also sells a vapor diffuser-type thing you can put in her room (with some ventilation of course).  Johnson's also has a vapor bath you could try.  I hope she feels better soon!

You can be damn sure lack of health insurance would not stop me from bringing my child to the pedi if he was sick.

    Ditto. especially in flu season.

    Whoa.  Missed that part.

  • I heard you aren't supposed to use Vick's on children under 2.

When Jonah was congested, we rolled up a towel and stuck it under the top of his mattress so he got some elevation and the mucus drips down instead of staying up. Also, you can use saline drops. You mix 1/4 tsp of salt to 1 cup of water. I'd dip a folded up tissue in it and squeeze two drops in each nostril from the corner of the tissue. And of course the cool mist humidifier but these were all suggestions my pedi gave us.

Ditto. My DS is uninsured right now and we are having a hard time financially. I would never let that stop me from taking him to the doctor, he's been several times in the last few months. It's called sacrifice and being a parent.

Try saline nasal drops along with your bulb. Also the humidifier as suggested. You can also try putting a pillow under baby's crib mattress to elevate it on one end, this helps with drainage.

  • Here is an article about Vick's in young children. It does more harm than good and can restrict breathing:

  • I'm sorry.  I literally cannot think straight I am so angry.

IF YOUR DAUGHTER IS SICK BRING HER TO THE DOCTOR.

I don't give a fvck if you have to beg for the money, birng her to a free clinic, or dance naked on a pole to make it happen.

  • Also if your baby is GASPING for air, CALL YOUR DOCTOR. Health insurance or not. Wow.

  • Ok, we are calming down now, and trying to help this frantic mother.

Designs, you can call any number of nurse hotlines for advice for free. If your baby needs to be seen they should work with you financially. How long is it before insurance kicks in? I understand worrying about money, but if she is really sick it will get much worse if you wait, like hospital bills worse rather than a walk in clinic.

Also, try "Little Noses" saline drops. Get a few drops in each nostril, it will break the muscous up enough to help you aspirate it or help her sneeze it out.

  • Ok, I didn't read the middle of the post very carefully because I knew how to help you for the nose congestion. Sounds a bit worse than I thought.

If we are only talking about nose congestion, and is still eating and sleeping (which is doesn't sound like), then use the solutions listed (saline drops, humidifier, even a steamy bathroom).

If there are other symptoms, a fever, the throwing up (which just could have been being upset), congestion in the chest, anything more serious than a stuffy nose - please figure out a way to get her seen my a medical professional. It's flu season, and the flu kills babies.

This.  Also, the doctor's offices will often negotiate a rate with you if you have no insurance.  It's actually easier for them, since there is no paperwork to submit.
