PLEASE HELP - Congested Baby

I really need some advice.

My LO is has a congested nose. She's never been sick before.

Last night was absolutely horrible. She didn't fall asleep until 2am (I put her down at 9pm) then she was up again by 4am and pretty much up and down constantly until 8:30am this morning.

I put her in the swing to get some sleep b/c I could tell she was exhausted. She fell right asleep then woke up a few minutes later coughing. She then threw up. Which is even more terrible considering how long it took her to get any milk in her belly between gasping for air.

I've used the bulb aspirator on her (doesn't help much) and have been trying to keep her upright.

PLEASE, PLEASE tell me what I can do for her so she can sleep and get better.

(You may see this post multiple times / multiple boards b/c I am genuinely desperate for help. Also, please don't say "Call the Pedi" b/c my DH just got a new job after being laid off and health ins. hasn't kicked in yet.)

TIA

  • Run a hot shower and take her in the bathroom with you.  That may help to get things going in her nose.

  • When DS had that same problem, the pedi told us to use the aspirator. I got SO MAD because we already did that, and the message I left for the nurse said we tried that and it didn't work. I wish they'd listen. Anyway, try saline drops and the aspirator. If the aspirator bulb doesn't work by itself, maybe it will help with the saline drops.

I also read you can put Vicks rub on babies' feet (the bottom of their feet) and it helps. I don't know if it's an OWT or not, but someone on 3-6 posted awhile ago that it actually worked.

We ended up just waiting it out with DS. We did what we could to help but it didn't do much to fix his issues. Good luck.

  • Saline drops before using the aspirator work miracles for DS's congestion.  We also use a cool mist humidifier during naps/nighttime sleep, Vicks BabyRub on the chest under the pjs, and Johnson's Soothing Vapor Bath (we do bath every night before bedtime).

  • Just a few drops of saline in each nostril works wonders for my little guy. I have also tried sitting in the bathroom with a hot shower running... it relaxes him but I don't know that it actually helps the congestion.

  • Use the saline drops, a few in each nostril!!  Wait a few min and then try to use the aspirator.  Sometimes my DD will sneeze after I put the drops in and that seems to help.  Try to put some Vic's vapo rub on babies chest, sides and back AND bottoms of the feet!! It really works!! My DD just got over her first cold and croup.....Vic's worked like a charm! I also would try the hot shower thing.  Giving my DD a warm bath helped to loosen the nose up.  I was also told by the Pedi to elevate the head of babies crib to help releave the congestion. I put two phone books side by side under the "head" of the matress.  Seemed to help a little.  Good luck!!!
