Infant Safety and CPR

Is anyone else thinking of taking an infant CPR class and first aid? I just don't want to be put in a situation that I can do anything about. It's not to bad $50 for both DH and I. But I am getting so over whelmed with all the appointments, sometimes I just want to go home and veg.

Re: Infant Safety and CPR

  • Absolutely worth it in my opinion!  Do it now before the baby arrives while you have time!

  • My healthcare provider certification just lapsed. I was supposed to renew last week, but my class was cancelled. I can't get in another class around here until super close to my due date Sad I remember how to do it all, and I don't need to recertify until I start nursing school in August. But I'll probably re-certify after baby is born and I'm comfortable leaving him for a couple of hours.

My mom and sister (our primary baby sitters when I'm at work) are getting certified. My dad is already certified. So is MIL. DH just wants me to "explain it to him".

  • If you didn't want to physically go to a class they have videos on the internet you can watch together.  I know it's not the same as practicing on one of the dummies, but it can give you a good idea of what to do in an emergency.

  • I get my CPR renewed every year through my school district. So I don't pay for it. But if I didn't, then I think I would choose to do it on my own.

I think it's a good thing to have. I have been getting my CPR training renewed since I was 15, and I only used it once, but it is very nice to know that I would be able to handle a situation should it come up.

  • Well worth it. ?Layla got?choked on a?cheez-it one time when she was first able to eat those types of foods. I was glad I knew what to do and didn't freak out.?

    ?

  • I would definitely take it. What you learn at those safety classes is invaluable, IMHO.

And it helps that my DH is a CPR instructor, so I have it easy.

  • It is deffinitely good information to know.  I am lucky in that I am required to be certified with my job and have to attend training yearly (at the company's expense).

  • We are signed up for one... I kind of feel overwhelmed also with all the appointments and classes plus just not feeling like going to work much less anything extra... but I know I would hate myself if I had the chance to learn about something that could help in an emergency and didn't bother taking the class, so we are doing it. And I'm sure I really won't want to do it later when I have to get someone to take care of the baby so we can go to a class!

Having taken infant CPR (and planning on doing it again with my Husband to get renewed) I'm going to advise AGAINST using the internet as your primary source for this one. As a refresher now and then, sure, but having a person there to tell you, and practicing on the dummies makes ALL THE DIFFERENCE.

And since I've been in a freak situation where I had to give a 3 year old CPR I'm going to say YES. TAKE IT.

If you're getting overwhelmed, spread them out a little more, but these two are ones you don't want to skip.

  • Both DH and I have to take CPR classes and first aid classes for my work (infant and adult, paid by company) My DH was thrilled when we were pregnant with DD to get the training and it really is helpful to know.
  • DH and I are both EMTs and highly recommend getting certified, not just for infants but for all stages of life. CPR is only effective if given within the first couple of minutes. For example, brain tissue starts dying after 6 minutes with no oxygen. However, and it depends on where you live, the national average response time from calling 911 to help at your door is around 8 or so minutes. So it's essential to be trained in it should you need it.

  • Definitely worth it.

If DH and I weren't already certified, we'd be taking the course for sure. You can never be too prepared!

  • I just signed up for a CPR class ay my hospital for DH and I.  It's $50 for us also.
  • DH and I took it, and I thought it was well worth it.  We had fun at the class too.

  • DH and I are both already certified through our jobs, but I do think it's worth it to know it- whether you find out through books, the hospital, or possible community college classes. The first aid is relatively the same as it is for any age, but the CPR is different! Also, some insurances will reimburse you for that!
  • We took this last weekend - totally worth it! Be forewarned though that it's difficult to really practice CPR with a belly (at least it was for me).

I do agree with you , it is much better to be there and really do it.  I have BLS, ACLS, and PALS that I get to take for free through the hospital so I used the videos just to show DH and then we practiced on the baby's teddy bear LOL.  It was a refresher for him since the standards have changed since he was in Paramedic School (he works in insurance now so it's been awhile since he's done anything like that).

  • We're taking that class.  Ours is actually a combo of infant care and infant safety/CPR.  DH requested that we take an infant care class because he doesn't really have any experience with newborns and I figured the CPR would be beneficial to both of us.  I think it's absolutely worth the time and cost!!

  • We took an infant CPR class a couple of months ago, and I think it was totally worth it. It made me feel more confident, and maybe I won't panic if *God forbid* something goes wrong.

Also, I totally agree with taking the class in person. Our instructor described the techniques, but actually practicing them makes a huge difference. I was only breathing into the dummy's mouth when I first started, like for reviving an adult, and I was really supposed to be covering the mouth and nose. If I was in a state of panic, I would've never figured that out.

  • I can't even imagine having a baby and not learning infant CPR...
  • My class is tonight at 6:30 - it's free! A lot of people have said to make sure to take infant CPR and safety and breastfeeding (if BF'ing) before the  baby arrives.
