Preemies

How Many of you....

I don't have a LO yet, but I have one on the way.  I'm definately high risk for more than one reason, but I'm frustrated because for the past couple weeks my HR OB and my reg OB have made a couple comments like "Lets just get to 32 weeks" and "Do you have any friends with preemies"  This bothers me a little.  I'm not even half way along and I feel like theres still a chance I could go full term.  But its looking more and more like I'm the only one holding out hope for that.  I was even advised by my HR OB on a different hospital because it has a better NICU.

I guess what I am wondering is how many of you were told you would probably go preterm while you were less than 20 weeks pregnant vs. those of you who had preemies due to unexpected complications.

Thanks!

Re: How Many of you....

  • I was right around 20 weeks when my OB started talking to me about the possibility of having a preterm birth.  she was measuring small & my cervix has started shortening a bit.  In the end, the complications were unexpected (pre-e & HELLP--never had blood pressure issues before or during the pregnancy) but they still led to what my Dr. thought would happen 9 weeks earlier.  there is a reason you are high risk, you know?  I was also really high risk due to lots of previous losses & a clotting disorder.  but, being high risk still did not soften the blow when I was told that I would have to deliver her at 29 weeks.  :(  hang in there!

No one had spoken to me about delivering early.

  • No one would have guessed.  Sam came early out of the blue.
  • I had some PTL at 30 weeks and was told then that the goal was to make it to 34 weeks.  We made it to 32w4d.  There was no reason found for my PTL.

  • I developed Severe Pre-e at 23w and 5days. I was put on hospital bedrest and basically told try and keep her in as long as possible but you may not make it though the weekend. We made iut through the weekend and the new plan became 28 weeks to deliver. I made it to 26 weeks before she went into distress and had to be delivered through an emergency c-section. With my new pregnancy I was basically told that I would be lucky if I made it to 32 weeks w/o developing Pre-e and that I would likely develop it around 28 weeks. Me and my Dr. made sure that I would l give birth in a level three hospital in case I have another preemie. GOOD LUCK!
  • Mine was out of the blue. I had a stomach ache on Tuesday, by Thursday I felt so bad I called the doctor, Thursday morning diagnosed with severe pre-e, they tried to hold me off as long as possible just to get the steroids in, Robbie was born on Saturday.
  • DD came early because I developed HELLP out of nowhere.  Good luck!  I hope you have a full term baby!

  • I had no warning at all.  I hope that you do go term, but honestly, I'd rather my doctors be realistic and upfront with me.  (hugs) and prayers to you and your baby!
  • after my first bleeding incident at 22w, the dr told me the goal was to get to 24 weeks. after we made it to 24w (with no bleeding), we started talking about delivering at 39w, but there was always the possibility of going early. as i had more bleeding incidents, we switched hospitals to a better NICU and the goals just keep getting shorter and shorter.

i think, although it seems discouraging, the drs are just being realistic and making sure all the bases are covered. i hope you make it to full term and don't need that level III NICU! good luck!

  • My OB told me at my 10 week appt which was my second appt, first was at 8 weeks, that I was definitely going to deliver early it was just a matter of how early.  Every week I stayed pregnant was basically an accomplishment in his eyes, because of how bad my blood pressure was.   At first we were aiming for 37 weeks, then 35, then it was just enough to keep baby alive.
  • I had a wonderful pregnancy until about 2 hours before I delivered (HELLP Syndrome). But, ditto the pp that said they would rather know up front. I think perinatalogists are always sort of brutally honest. I like brutal honesty! I wish that I had a clue about having a preemie prior to it happening. I had never thought about what it means to have a preemie or how I would possibly feel about leaving a baby in the NICU. I'm sure its not comforting, but it does give you an opportunity to educate yourself, to get ready for the baby early, etc.

Hopefully you can prove them wrong and deliver on your due date:)

  • My water broke out of the blue at 30 weeks 5 days.  I was told that if I didn't go into labor on my own before 34 weeks they would induce me then.  Well I went into labor on my own and Zoe was born at 31 weeks 0 days.

  • With my twins there was always a discussion of them coming early. Its just a matter of how early they were going to arrive and what could be done to keep them in longer.

I saw a high risk dr. and at 20 weeks was told that one of the babies was growth restricted. At 28 weeks I was admitted into the hospital bc of this and relased after a 5 day stay to go home on modified bedrest.

I then saw the HR dr every week for doppler ultrasounds (checking for bloodflow from the placenta to my IUGR baby). At 30 weeks I was once again admitted to the hospital bc the dr's saw some concern with the blood flow.

I was in the hospital when I started to feel bad and ended up having pre-e that progressed into HELLP syndrome in a matter of 10 hours. Thankfully I was at the hospital already. My girls were born at 31 weeks 4 days.

  • I never had any problems with the pregnancy until my 3rd trimester and then it was really only high blood pressure. My doctors didn't seem to concerned really, because I'm thinking if they did, they would of put me on bed rest. Or at least I like to think they would.

  • I developed polyhydramnios (excessive amniotic fluid) for no known reason around 24 weeks.  I was put on modified rest (allowed to go to work but not do anything strenuous there or at home).  My OB at the time said very casually (this still amazes me) that she didn't think I would make it to 37weeks and the goal was at least 28 weeks, hopefully 32.  Why she thought I was such high risk and didn't put me on full bedrest still frustrates me and gets my blood boiling.  Three days after that appointment my water broke at 25w5d and I went into PTL.  I was given steroids and magnesium to stop labor.  I held on another 2 weeks on hospital bedrest and delivered at 27w5d.  Even after my water broke, the goal was to try to get to 34 weeks, when they would induce.
  • Completely unexpected pPROM at 28 weeks.  Textbook until then...
  • I had PIH and a low lying placenta so I was being monitored closely. I was advised that my PIH was under decent control and the low lying placenta had corrected itself at about 26 weeks and my dr. even said congrats to being a  healthy pregnant woman again. I was so excited things were looking up. Then out of the blue at almost 29 weeks I had a placental abruption and was admited to the hospital and had some scary moments that they thought they might have to deliver at about 30 weeks. At that point I was told probably would deliver early, the goal was at least 34 weeks. After about 25 days in the hospital the bleeding finally stopped and I was released on Thursday to strict at home bed rest, things seemed to be looking up. Then Sunday morning my water broke out of the blue so I delivered that day.

So I guess we had some time to come to terms with it, but hoped we would make it further.

  • I was at risk all along, so it was always in our minds.  We ended up delivering early because of low fluid which was a complete surprise and emergency at the point it was found.  I hope you do make it all the way to full term, don't give up!

This exactly, except mine was born at 33w6d. We didn't have a reason for the water breaking.

  • Unexpected placental abruption at 34w (not diagnosed until after I went in to L&D and delivered DS at 34.5).

I say stay positive but realistic and DEFINITELY use the hospital with the best NICU. I had no elevated risks but we had already chosen our hospital for this reason.
