If you did Ferber/CIO at night, what about naps?

We did Ferber last night and I am just wondering what to do for naps today. She fell asleep in her stroller on my walk this morning for the 1st nap and on my lap after nursing for 35 min for 2nd nap just now. I figured she cried enough at night and didnt try to put her in the crib. We are doing Ferber not only for night wakings and learning to go to sleep w/o rocking but also b/c she wouldn't sleep in her crib (bouncer or swing only). Also if you can let me know what your experience was w/ Ferber that would be awesome. Just wondering if tonight might be better (she cried over an hour and then still woke up every 2 hours but the good thing was she put herself back to sleep after less crying each time).

  • Ferber worked for us. The first night is really rough but it gets better. Are you using the timeline they give in the book? Going in to check on her in varying intervals getting longer and longer? You do the same thing for naps. We follow Ferber at home for naps as well and it works just fine. We do all naps and nightime in the crib if we are at home.

  • I'll let DS fuss during naps, but if he hasn't fallen asleep within 20-30 min, I figure he's not ready for a nap and take him out of the crib and we try again later.  I'm more strict about his bed time and he never CIO more than 20 min b/c he falls asleep....

  • We started Ferber last night too.

It took about an hour but DS slept for about 3 hours after settled.

This am's naps were while I was running errands, very bad way to get him to sleep. But I had to get some stuff for his Christening party this weekend and I'm working the rest of the week. Anyway..

This afternoon I didn't let him CIO very long either, first he has a low fever from getting his 6 mo shots yesterday. But after I soothed him and gave him another bottle (feedings are off sched too) I did just leave him there, he had rolled onto his side, fussed, settled, fussed, settled and he was asleep within 10 minutes, still sleeping!

Tomorrow my mom and dad have him, I don't want to put too much pressure on them so I'm gonna tell them that if he wakes up after 20-30 min and still seems tired to not hold him as long and see if he can do what he did today.

I was amazed of well it worked in just two tries.

    GL!

  • I didn't answer your question all the way. When doing Ferber for naps you follow the schedule of checking in on them in longer time periods but if you have gotten to 30 minutes and they still aren't asleep you get them up and then try again later once they are giving you sleep cues. (Rubbing eyes, yawning, fussyness, etc..)
  • We used the same schedule for naps.  We started with night and the next day used the same intervals for naps.  We increased the intervals each night and continued the routine for the next day.  We followed the advice in the book about nap timing,  if they haven't fallen asleep in 30 minutes we stop the "nap" and try again later.

We had a great experience.  The first night DD went to bed fine.  When she had her first waking we offered food, but she did not want it.  At that point we went to the intervals.  We did 3-5-10 and a few minutes more and she was out.  She woke a couple more times, but just for a little fussing.  We have not had a night waking since night 1.  She may wake and fuss or give a little cry, but she always goes right back to sleep.  Naps are still a little harder, but she is doing much better than before.  Nap time has also increased.
