s/o Turkey day menu...

Alot of you mentioned sweet potatoes.  I really need to find a good sweet potato recipe for turkey day!  This our second year of hosting, and my sweet- potato-lovin-sister wasn't there last year, so I didn't worry about it, but she's coming this year.  So I need some good sweet potatoes!

Anybody got a good recipe?

    INGREDIENTS:

    4 medium size sweet potatoes
    1 cup sugar
    Dash of salt
    1 teaspoon cinnamon or nutmeg
    3/4 stick butter
    2 slices lemon
    1 tablespoon flour
    1/4 cup water

    TO PREPARE:

Peel and cut potatoes as for thick french fries. Place in 8" x
12" x 2" baking dish. Cover potatoes with sugar and salt.
Sprinkle cinnamon or nutmeg over the sugar. More can be used.
Cover with pieces of butter. Twist slices of lemon over this
and place peel in with potatoes. Sift flour evenly over
potatoes. Add water to mixture so it may be barely seen. Bake
in 400 degree oven for 1 hour or until potatoes are done and
sugar and butter have made a thick syrup about the consistency
of molasses. Baste potatoes frequently with syrup.

    SERVES 4 TO 6

It's going to look like there's WAY too much sugar, but trust me.  It's SOOOO GOOOODD! Also, make sure your sweet potatoes aren't much thicker than 1/2".  If they are too thick, they'll just be kinda mushy inside.

  • We make praline yams. I am not for sure, but it involves brown sugar, coconut and pecans.

  • Oh, also, I usually cook it longer than an hour so the potatoes get more carmalized looking.

  • I just do layers of sliced sweet potatoes, butter & brown sugar.  I like to keep it simple.

  • My mom makes them with crushed pineapple (one can) and brown sugar (maybe a cup??). She cooks and mashes about 7 or 8 potatoes and mixes in everything else. I don't like sweet potatoes, so I've never had it, but everyone absolutely loves them.

I have no idea to be honest!  I've only ever had sweet potato fries!  Seriously, the first time I cooked.  EVER. (Other than appetizers, or baking.  I love to bake) was Thanksgiving for 9 people last year.  Thanks to the foodnetwork, it actually went over really well, but I'm still a novice.

I'd be interested in anything that goes over well at Thanksgiving...

    Yep yep!  Same thing.

This is honestly the only way I eat sweet potatoes.  Well, this way and fries, but they don't count.

    You're welcome!
