If someone sends you a birth announcement are you obligated

    no.

    I didn't send out my birth announcements for my first and only child in hopes of getting a gift. I just sent them out b/c I thought they were cute and wanted to do it.

    Depends on the person.  We send gifts for all close friends and family - or usually bring them the gift when we meet the baby.

    But for random people, we don't send gifts.  I usually just send them back a Congratulations card.

    No, you really are not.  I struggled with whether or not to send one, because I did not want people to feel obligated.  I will tell you, however, that MANY will send........which is fun!

    I wouldn't for a former-coworker.

    And I forgot to mention that by "gift" I mean gift card.  I usually do a BRU gift card so I don't have to spend a bunch of time and energy on shipping.
