Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Pedi told me to fatten Noah up

We had his 9 month well-visit today. He was 16 pounds, 14 oz (5th percentile) and 28 inches long (50th percentile).  He's been crawling since he was 6 months and has been cruising for about a month now. He's just all over the place and they think he must be just burning so many calories away that not a lot of weight is sticking. We are small people too, so it's also in his genes. Anyway, they told me to start adding canola oil to his purees for the fats and to feed him more cheeses. I EBF along with his solid meals and I've been super worried about my supply since getting pregnant so I'm thinking maybe I might add a feeding of formula too. Anyone else have a peanut they need to fatten up? I know it's probably stupid, but I kind of feel like a bad mom right now :(

  • Oh don't feel bad! My dd was a chunker up til 4 months and now she's a skinny girl.  We haven't gone to her 9 month appt yet so not sure how much she weighs but probably right around your son or maybe a few lbs more.  Don't feel bad though, as long as he's healthy overall!  Maybe fatter foods like the cheese and avocado will help him :)

    I know you probably trust your doc over an internet stranger (as you should), but I just want to warn you against adding canola oil to your son's food.  Canola oil is often genetically modified and is one of the worst oils for your digestive system.  There is a reason it is in just about all the processed foods you eat - because it's cheap.

    There are also issues with how the oil is refined - it is rancid because it is heated to such a high temperature during extraction.  I wrote about it in my health blog (link in siggy) recently if you're interested.

    I would recommend coconut oil for your LO if you're going to add something to his food.  Coconut oil is really high in fat - the good kind - in levels similar to breastmilk.  Coconut oil is also a more stable fat.

    Just make sure you get organic, expeller-pressed/cold-pressed coconut oil so you know it isn't rancid and be sure to store it in your fridge in a dark container.

He has been eating figure foods for 2 months and that didn't help either. I also felt like a bad mom. But he seems happy so I am ok now.
  • At 9 months DS was I believe 17 pounds 4 oz.  He was 16 pounds 4 oz at 6 months. I was concerned that he had only gained a pound in 3 months but his pedi said it was because he was so active. He wasn't concerned. I still can't help but he concerned though.  He is a peanut and has been since birth. I just can't help but feel like a bad mom when all my friend's babies that are a few months younger are all bigger than him, but I really know its nothing I am doing.
  • Do not feel like a bad mom! There are percentiles for a reason, and not every child is going to be at the 50th %ile.

    DD was and still is a peanut. She started in the 25th %ile and dropped to the 3rd by her 9 month appointment. She still hovers at the 3rd %ile.

    AW - what about olive oil? Is there a reason you would use cococnut oil over olive oil?

  • We were told the same thing.  DS went from 25%ile to 5%ile.

    The only thing we were told was to butter his veggies.

    We had a weight check today and he's up to the 10%ile.

    I'm not worried.

  • me! my LO weighed 15lbs 13 oz about 1.5 weeks ago.  I think he is in the 4 percentile.  my mom was worrying me but I know he is healthy and eating well.  I wonder what my Dr will say at the 9 month well visit.

    Here's a good link on the health benefits of coconut oil.

    Basically, coconut oil has a higher saturated fat content than olive oil.  It also has many other health benefits you don't get from other oils (see the link above).

    But the extraction techniques are the main reason.  Olive oil is many times rancid - and as someone with Crohn's Disease, I am very sensitive to how oils effect my digestive system.  I know if olive oil effects my sensitive GI tract when used incorrectly, I imagine it could also effect a baby's sensitive gut.

    I wrote about the differences in olive oils here.  If you're going to use olive oil, make sure you use the right kind for the right purpose.  That link also has a list of the best to worst fats for you (based on research through the Weston A. Price foundation).

    Also, notice that there is coconut oil in most formulas - this is because it's a good way to boost fat content to that of breastmilk.  They don't use olive oil, because it isn't as adequate.  Things like soy oil and canola oil are used because they are cheap.

  • I could have written this word for word. My DS is super active and weighs just shy of 18 pounds and I am wondering what the pedi will say at the 9 months visit as well. But he is EBF and a happy boy who eats a good amount so I am not super worried.

    Noah is EBF and he gets 3 solid meals a day, plus a snack of yogurt between lunch and dinner. I feel like he eats A LOT, but apparently not enough :(

    All babies are different.  Like I said, my older son is a shrimpie.  But he has met all of his developmental milestones on time or even early!

    I wouldn't worry too much. :)

  • Also, keep in mind that BFed babies tend to drop on the charts after 6 months as they tend to be leaner than FF babies by that point (and the charts are based largely on FF babies as most babies over 6 months are FF).

    Kiddo dropped from the 50th at 6 months to the 25th at 9 month in weight - pedi wasn't a bit concerned.  He's always been active and he's hitting milestones no problem.  Pedi also pointed out that genetics kick in by 9 months - if you and DH are small, your kid is likely to be small as well.

    I wouldn't worry ;-)

  • Awww, you shouldn't worry!!  It's ok for him to be in that low percentile.  My son is in the 12th now at 9 months.  He just went to 18lbs.  And he was born at 9lbs 1oz, in the 87th percentile!
    Check out this chart from KellyMom...it is totally normal for EBF babies to drop in the percentiles.  It really made me feel better about everything.  If your baby is active and happy, than he's fine   =)

  • DS is EBF and went from the 75th percentile in weight at 2 months to the 10th percentile at 9 months.  He was at the 50th percentile at 6 months so it was a big drop.  The pediatrician wasn't too concerned although she said she wanted DS to at least be at the same percentile at 12 months.  I've read that BF babies tend to gain a lot of weight at the beginning and much less as they get older and more mobile, which is the opposite for FF babies.  I think kellymom has a height and weight chart for BF babies.
