Funny Smell

There is a weird smell coming from my LO's umbilical cord.  Is that normal??

    It's not supposed to smell good.  DD's pedi explained it to me that it's basically rotting off.  So um ... just use some rubbing alcohol on it to keep it clean, and STOP SMELLING IT!   eww.

    Our pedi told us not to use rubbing alcohol... to just leave it alone.  And I can't help but smell it!  We've been noticing this strange odor for a couple days and couldn't figure out where it was coming from... and finally decided it was the umbilical cord this morning.  Yuck!

    DS had this too and I just made sure I was diligent with using alcohol preps at every diaper changing.  I was afraid it was infected but DH (who is an EMT) assured me that the skin would be really red around it if there was an infection.

    They are sometimes called "Smelly Belly Buttons" or "Stinky Belly Buttons" for this reason. Totally normal!
