Telling the Parents

Hey -

 I still haven't told my parents we are expecting yet and was wondering how all of you went about telling the good news? Any creative ideas? What's your story?

Re: Telling the Parents

  • We told my parents on their 29th wedding anniversary.  Not super creative though :)

  • We just recently bought a house and when taking our parents on the tour - the last stop was the baby room - we had hung a framed pic of the ultrasound photo on the wall and showed the room. Since we just moved in, there was nothing in the room but the frame. They got it right away. :)

  • While PG w/ our son, we made copies of the U/S & put them in baby frames to give to our parents.
  • We had both sets of parents over for dinner and gave them each a Grandchildren frame.  It was so funny watching the looks on their faces as they figured it out.  They loved it.
  • We told DH's parents by having them unwrap a bib that said, "Baby's 1st Halloween."
  • I heard a couple of ideas through friends that you might be interested in.  One couple went to the bakery and had them make a cake the color (pink for a girl) that the baby was going to be and then they had the family together for dinner and when they cut the cake everyone found out it was going to be a girl.  I have also heard of the frame idea that is what we did for my parents.  For my husband parents...they take care of our two dogs all the time and when we found out that we were pregnant we bought two bibs saying I love grandma and I love grandpa and put them on the dogs and sent them into the room to tell them :)  They were very confused at first but when we told them that the bibs weren't for the dogs their faces lit up!  When my sister found out that they were pregnant for a second time they made a shirt for their son that said I'm going to be a big brother so you could also do something like make a shirt for yourself that say "baby bump" and wear it around your family until someone puts two and two together.  Just a few fun ideas :)  Enjoy!

  • We bought both of our moms shirts that said "Best Grandma" or something like that from CafePress & got the dad's hat's that said "Grandpa" on it.

  • I had my parents over for their birthday dinners and I had a dozen roses in the middle of the dinner table. After we ate, I gave my mom a card that said "6 orange roses from your baby and 6 white roses from ours"

    She immediately got it and started crying.... my dad on the other hand, continued to eat dinner until my mom explained things to him.

  • I told my parents on Mother's Day.  I made her a card from her new granddaughter or grandson.  I have this saved if #2 ever comes around...

    I do not have a face to see,

    or put inside a frame.

    I do not have soft cheeks to kiss;

    I don't yet have a name.

    You can't hold my tiny hands,

    nor whisper in my ear.

    It's still too soon to sing a song,

    or cuddle me so near.

    But all will change come November,

    when they say I'm due.

    I'm your new grandson or granddaughter;

    I can't wait ?til I meet you.

    All I ask between now and then

    is your patience while I grow.

    I promise I'll be worth the wait,

    because of all the love we'll know.

    So as you're waiting patiently,

    please pray lots of prayers for me.

    I cannot wait to be a part

    of this wonderful family!

  • We told our parents I was pregnant by giving them each a "Little Critter" book.  My mom used to always read us those books when we were little, so it was a perfect way to tell them!  They have "Grandma and Me", "Grandpa and Me", and "Grandma, Grandpa, and Me."
