High-Risk Pregnancy

Question from 3rd Tri about Blood Pressure

I suffered from high blood pressure prior to pregnancy. So far my blood pressure has been okay but it is slowly starting to creep back up. If you were made high risk because of your blood pressure, when did it really start to elevate high enough to concern your doctor? What was the first course of action your doctor took?

Re: Question from 3rd Tri about Blood Pressure

  • My BP was normal up until 30w when it crept up to 160/100. After two readings that high and small amounts of protein in my urine, I was hospitalized for 4 days. In the hospital, it was evident that bedrest lowered my BP so I was sent home on strict bedrest. Now I am seen by my OB twice a week for labs, BPP's, and NST's. I will be delivered in 2 weeks when I hit 37 weeks.

My doctor suspects I may have had an underlying BP issue prior to pregnancy. Pregnancy can cause lower BP's during the 1st and 2nd trimester, which may have masked the issue. I guess we will find out after the baby is born!

Thanks so much. My bp has been super low the 2nd trimester. Prior to pregnancy it always hovered around 150/90. I am really worried about it because my mom had horrendous blood pressure issues with her pregnancy. Will you doctor allow you to try a vaginal birth?

    All ALers welcome!
  • My baby is breech, so I am having a c-section. However, my OB did give me the option of trying a version procedure to turn the baby. He said that there was a 50% sucess rate with 1st pregnancies. There are also risks to the procedure. Then, if the baby could be turned, I would be induced -- which at 37 weeks and no cervical changes would only have a 50% chance of working. So I decided to go the c-section route. I am a control-freak and this pregnancy has been stressful with lots of unknowns and "wait and see's" -- so I would rather the birth be calm, controlled, and over quickly. My OB was open to either option though -- so hopefully you will have some say in how you deliver!
  • Thanks so much for your help. My DH and I and my OB have been monitoring my bp very closely this whole pregnancy and now that I am getting closer to the weeks where it would typically go up I am really nervous, which I know wont help anything. So I really appreciate your input.

  • With my  first pregnancy, it spiked at 23 weeks.  I was put on medication at that point.  I am seeing a high risk doctor this time, although it has been OK so far.
  • Mine was really high last week, paired with some pretty significant swelling and headaches they are concerned it might be the start of pre-e. Pre-pg it was normally 105/55 or so and now I'm getting readings as high as 160 / 90. They are having me use a home monitor for the past week and on Thursday we'll discuss the next steps and whether bedrest might be a good idea.
  • My b/p started to elevate at about 26 weeks, at 28 weeks I was admitted into the hospital for 24 hour monitoring of my b/p. When it was steadily down because of bed rest I was discharged on home bed rest. My b/p when not lying is at 140/80 now (when not pregnant my b/p is 100/50).

I go in for 2 appointments a week and have an induction scheduled at 37 weeks. I will have a vaginal birth, they will try to control my b/p with meds. I may need an emergency c-section if baby is in distress or my b/p is uncontrollably through the roof.

A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.
After 7 years trying to concieve, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs, my third IVF was a success!
My Christmas baby turned into a turkey bird! Dillon Richard was born at 34 weeks, 5 days on November 28, 2009 after 10 weeks on bedrest for preeclampsia.

This pretty much describes me as well except I am on hospital bedrest instead of at home.

  • It started creeping up at 20 weeks, at 28 weeks it was 150/100 and 160/100.  My doctor put me on bedrest immediately.  I stayed there until I was induced at 35 weeks.  My doctor doesn't believe in putting women on bp medicine unless they had HPB before their pregnancy.
