is there a generic nutramigen?

This stuff is so expensive (especially since I was feeding him my breast milk).  :)  Does anyone know of a generic form?  Or where I can get financial assistance (vouchers, coupons etc)?  We do not qualify for WIC....so I can't get it there.  Thanks!

  • I have heard of some people getting it covered by their insurance.  You can try having your Dr write a script and see if they cover it.  Worth a shot. And I don't think there is a generic.

  • Yeah I tried that already.  Thanks though.  :)

  • If you register with their website (can't remember the manufacturer) they will send you formula checks.  It's not much, but every bit helps.  I'd watch the baby boards and the Swap board as well -- people sometimes post if they have extras.  You could also sign up with the other manufacturers and swap formula checks.

  • Our pedi gives us a bunch of it at every visit and also tells us to call and ask if they have any samples when we run out.  We are on the RTF kind so I feel your pain.  And the enfamil.com website does have a program where they give you so much off, I think it's like $85 maybe?  I don't know exactly.  Also, sign up with similac.com because Alimentum is basically the same thing.  They send $5 checks monthly.  It's not a lot, but it does  help some!

  • I agree with PP. DD#1 was on it for a couple weeks before she was switched to neocate.  My only suggestion if it is really creating a finacial burden for you is too see what your doctor and insurance say about switching to neocate.  My insurance covered neocate because it is perscription only.  Neocate is nasty (as in fowl tasting and smelling) though. Check with your insurance what the shared cost would be if any though because neocate is more expensive out of pocket then nutramigen. ($25 for nutramigen vs. $32 for neocate).  Both of my DDs qualified for it.  DD#1 for a protein absorbtion issue associate with her LCH and DD#2 for her severe acid reflux.  GL though.

  • I definitely need to talk to the social worker at MUSC.  There has also been talk about Neocate and one similar to that.  I got on the list for enfamil's family beginnings and the rewards program for nutramigen.  every bit does help!  thanks for the suggestions!!

This site may or may not be useful to you. I don't believe that your state is one of the few that require insurance companies to pay or reimburse the cost. It sucks, I know. We were on Alimentum for abou 8 months before having to switch to EleCare (pretty much the same as Neocate). I think it's a sin to charge that much for formula when parents have no other option. My DS is still on EleCare Vanilla. I have extra cans of EleCare that is for babies 1 year and younger. If your DS goes to Elecare or NeoCate, email me at katiecoleman15 at gmail.com and I'll send you what I have left. You can email if you ever have any questions or anything. My DS has severe reflux and now has a g-tube and had a fundo done back in July. I think your DS has some reflux issues as well.

But yeah, sign up on enfamil.com. Also, I know our pedi always had samples of Alimentum and would generously hand them out to us at every visit.

  • Strangely, even though our insurance specifically said they would not cover formula, and when I called to inquire, they said NO, and when I filed an appeal, they said NO, when I ordered it through our insurance mail order pharmacy, it was covered 100% with no issue.  I wanted to scream!  Honestly, people, you couldn't be less helpful if you tried!!!

We live in FL--formula covered is not mandated and we have Cigna, so I ordered through Cigna tel-drug.  I did it because I was paying OOP and filing reimbursements from our FSA account and wanted to use the FSA directly.  Neocate also suggests trying the mail order in case your insurance will cover it that way, so i figured I had nothing to lose.
