Babies: 9 - 12 Months

s/o "Seriously"...How many of us had NICU babies?

It seems like so many of us had babies that stayed in the NICU. Whether it was an hour or several months, was your baby in the NICU?[Poll]

  • My boys were born at 36 weeks exaxctly and spent 24 hours in the NICU.  I was lucky they did so well, and they came home with me.

  • I answered yes, but it was truly only a few hours. My heart goes out to all the babes who had longer stays.
  • SS reporting for duty:

DS was in the "special care" nursery, which is not technically NICU.

  • DD's stay in the NICU was a complete shock to us, I had a "Normal" pregnancy with no signs of anything wrong I was induced at 39 and 3 because DD has having some tachycardia episodes but they stopped when I went in to be induced.

She came out not breathing and blue, they revived her...Worst 8 days of my life

  • We were so lucky, DD was born almost 2 weeks late. My heart aches for what some of you have gone through. I can't even imagine how hard that must have been.
  • DS was born 5 weeks early,  he was in the Special Care Unit for a week.
  • I just want to say that I applaude all of you ladies who had to go through that. I could not even imagine. I thought the 30 mins I didn't get to see her after my c-section was hard, but after hearing some of your stories I can see just how fortunate I was (in the scope of things).

My hat's off to you... but mostly I just wish I could hug each of you. A zombie hug will have to suffice... Left HugRight Hug

The girls in my preemie mom's group have been awesome at making me realize that whether it was a couple of hours, a couple of days, or a couple of weeks, it still sucks equally bad.

I hate so much that so many of us had to experience it.

I hope, for those going on to have more babies, that they are all FT and completely issue-free!!!!  :-)

  • 2 days in the NICU for Bri. The first night was the hardest from having a c-section and going up there every 2 hours to feed her.

There's always one in every group!  Wink

  • DS was in there for 26 hours, which isn't as long as most of  the ladies' little ones, but it felt like an eternity to me.
  • My DD was in the NICU almost 5 days- she was born on 12/22 at 5am, and we took her home Christmas night.  She was 1 month early, and weighed only 4 pounds.  I hated not having her next to me, but I did learn so much from the NICU staff while DD was there.  To me it was a baby care boot camp.  I went home feeling more confident about caring for my little baby.
  • Oh man, I cannot imagine. DS was released from the hospital, but I ended up being readmitted the next day and spending the rest of the week there. I was really lucky though, and the hospital let DH and DS stay with me the whole time. There were a few times I couldn't see them, and those were the hardest hours, but that doesn't even compare to not being with your child for nights on end.
  • My DS was born at 34 weeks and wasn't breathing properly. This kept him in the NICU for two weeks and one day. It was the most awful two weeks of my life.
  • NICU for one week, and then the Level II nursery for 4 weeks. 35 days in total. Every minute sucked.
  • DS was there for 2 days.  I had been induced at 36w4d due to preeclampsia, and his breathing was depressed because of the magnesium IV I'd been on for 33 hours of labor.  I had to be on the IV for 24 hours after delivery, so I couldn't see DS until the next day in the NICU.  That night I spiked a fever so they wouldn't release him to me, although he was well enough to leave the NICU.  So we didn't get him in our room until the third day, and we left the hospital on the 4th.  It was really hard on me not being able to see him for over 24 hours after he was born.  I still get sad when I think about that, but I realize that I was lucky that he did so well and we were able to take him home right away.

  • I answered option #3 because DD was re-admitted to the hospital when she was 9 days old for 10 days and she was put in the PICU, not the NICU. I think it is almost the same thing.
  • 19 days in the NICU for us.  worst/best time of my life.  finally being a mom, but having to leave my precious baby every night.  it makes me scared for pre-e again with #2. I don't  know how I would handle that or bedrest again with a toddler.
