is it expensive to go to L&D and stop contrx?

is it worth it? this will be my 3rd attempt at stopping them

Re: is it expensive to go to L&D and stop contrx?

  • Hmmmmmm....compared to NICU?
  • Loading the player...
  • uhm?  the nicu is insanely expensive...

You won't have to pay upfront to go to L&D...and you could ask them to give you a script to take home with you if you find this is happening often.

    Do you not have insurance?

DD1(4):VSD & PFO (Closed!), Prenatal stroke, Mild CP, Delayed pyloric opening/reflux, Brachycephaly & Plagiocephaly, Sacral lipoma, Tethered spinal cord, Compound heterozygous MTHFR, Neurogenic bladder, Urinary retention & dyssynergia, incomplete emptying, enlarged Bladder with Poor Muscle Tone, EDS-Type 3. Mito-Disorder has been mentioned

DD2(2.5): Late term premie due to PTL, low fluid & IUGR, Reflux, delayed visual maturation, compound heteroygous MTHFR, PFAPA, Bilateral kidney reflux, Transient hypogammaglobulinemia, EDS-Type 3

  • I'm pretty sure the benefits of having your contractions stopped at 30 weeks far outweight the cost of going to L&D for a third time. I also bet it's a heck of a lot cheaper than having a newborn in NICU for several weeks because he/she was born 9 weeks early.

  • Have you talked to your doctor about the amonut of visits? There are things they can do to stop them and keep you at home. Such as oral medication or SQ medication. Especially since you are only 30 wks.

  • 30 weeks is way too early, your baby could be in the NICU for weeks/months.

This. NICU costs were something like 20k a DAY for my nephew. Why are you concerned, does your insurance not cover anything at all??

  • Omg go get them stopped who cares how much it is.  A baby cannot breathe on its own amongst other things at 30w.... Yes, the survival rate is good... but what it would have to go through is not an option IMO
  • Is it worth it to take a chance on your baby's survival b/c of costs?  I can't imagine being in that position, but I hope you don't have to choose financial security over your baby's well-being.

This...DD was born fullterm and in the NICU for only 8 Days, her bill for everything is a whopping $120,000, thank god for insurance but it still only covers 80%.

I cann't imagine what 6 weeks plus in the NICU would cost

ETA: Not to mention the emotional and Pyhsical toll it takes on you and the Baby. I suffered from Severe PPD because if her stay.

  • You are only 30 weeks...there is nothing I wouldn't pay to stop contractions at this point.  That baby needs to stay in you many more weeks and get a better shot at being healthy and strong.

  • Let me get this straight. You are 30 weeks and having PTL for the 3rd time and are asking if it is WORTH IT FINANCIALLY to stop contractions?????

HELL YES it's worth it! You are talking about the LIFE of your baby. Please please please go to L&D and HOPE they can stop them.

A baby at 30 weeks is not full term. It's lungs are not developed yet and it will spend some serious time in the NICU.

    GO!

  • Yes it is worth it....I don't get this at all....
  • Lily's NICU bill was only 100k, and that was only for 13 days.

Gosh, I'm sure a short visit and a shot of terbertuline costs a lot more than that...

    Hmm

I don't think it is fair to scream at the OP.  I don't know exactly what her circumstances are, but I can't imagine how heart-breaking it would be to go tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars into debt if you had to pay for several visits to L&D and potentially NICU out of pocket.  It's easy to say it's just money when it's not your financial future being ruined.

  • compared to 85k for 2 days in the NICU I'm going with no. Do you not have insurance?

WHen it comes to my childs life there is no money I wouldn't pay, I would do anything if it meant saving the heartbreak, pain, and emotional struggle that is the NICU...and trust me my H and I are far from financially well off.

Are you effing kidding me?  Who gives a sh!t about financial future...this could be a baby's life on the line.  I really hope you're never put in the position to choose between your financial well being and your kids - I'd hate to see the outcome.

Excellent response.  She clearly has no concept of life in the NICU, possible complications, potential future outcomes, etc.

I'd go completely broke and do whatever I had to to keep my daughter safe and healthy.  Period.

I was on bedrest with DD from weeks 28-35 for PTL and had more than one over night stay in the hospital because of contractions during that time. It was my financial future being ruined but DH and I were more than happy to go into debt getting DD here healthy than having a preemie with potentially life threatening complications.

  • Did any of you, who think I am so heartless, actually pay completely out of pocket for your emergency L&D and NICU costs?  If so I'd be interested in hearing your perspective- if not, get off your high horse.  There are unfortunately many people in this world who have to make difficult decisions about medical care and see their loved ones die b/c of it- it's easy to take for granted if you have decent health insurance or live in a country with a high level of medical care available to people of all socio-economic classes.

I'm not preaching- you're the one who is preaching.  You have no idea what the OP's situation is.

    Shut up.

Do you really think, for one second, that she would have to pay the full bill?  Really?  If she is that bad off financially, she will qualify to have her bill reduced, etc.

And do you really think that a trip to L&D is going to cost less than the necessary LIFE SAVING INTERVENTIONS that will need to be done to save her babies life?  REALLY??

Until you personally have been in this situation, it is best to zip the lip.

  • Seriously!?!?!?! There are so many programs that can help pregnant women and people with no insurance, I would move in with my parents and give up everything if it meant my daughter was safe and healthy...I really don't understand why you think that we are on High horses...if that is the case I would gladly get off this horse to have those 8 days back and to be able to hold my daughter before she was 2 DAYS old

  • Wow....

I understand that the idea of a huge hospital bill is terrifying...but really? REALLY? At 30 weeks, your LO would likely spend weeks, if not months, in the NICU.

I'm appalled that someone would even consider this, let alone ask the question out loud. Wow.

This times a fafillion. Get your priorities in order OP!

  • This is your 3rd time and you have no idea of cost yet? How bout you go in and sllllooooowwwwllllyyyy walk past the premies before making a decision. You cannot even begin to imagine what it is like to have a preemie and I hope NONE of you ever find out.
  • OMG I forgot I even post this.  I posted this AFTER I went to L&D. I clearly was not paying a ton of attention to the way this was written/how it came off. I am insured, and a worry-wart. I go for anything that is out of the norm to L&D. My real question is is it expensive to stop these contractions? Is it worth it because there seems to be a lot of risk involved to the baby to have this hormone injected....not sure if anyone will read this follow up post, but sorry I was so careless with my first attempt at asking...
