Babies on the Brain

My MIL is giving me a headache

I know she's very excited about this baby, but I think she's forgetting that she's not the decision-maker here. She's being pretty pushy about how things are going to work, from what type of carrier we'll use to what sports the kid will play (and 200 other things in between). It's not like she's even saying "I think you should try this carrier" and "I hope she plays this sport." Instead, she says "you're going to get x carrier" and "she's going to play this sport."

It wouldn't bother me if she said stuff without such a bossy tone. In fact, I'd be happy that she is so excited. Instead, it's like she's already decided everything on our behalf. She can say whatever she wants, but she's going to be in for a surprise she finds out it's not up to her. Heck, some of it isn't even up to us - it's up to the freaking kid.

  • I can completely relate. And we don't even know the sex and we're getting those comments. It's ridiculous - I try to smile and say "we'll see what the baby wants to do" or "thanks for the recommendation, we'll consider it"as much as I can.
  • Tell her you will use whatever carrier happens to work best for YOU, and your kids will do whatever activities THEY choose to do.

And good luck, because it will probably get worse once the baby is here.

  • Um, yeah. That would be irritating. I'd have a gentle chat with her, she's probably so excited she doesn't know she's doing it.
