Doula cost

If you're using a birth doula, or interviewed some, do you mind sharing the fee and what it includes? I get that this will vary widely by area, yada yada, but my local board is pretty slow. I'll just tack on 20% to whatever the national average is since I live in Jersey lol Thanks!

Re: Doula cost

  • I'm in the midwest and they range from $200-$500, based on experience.

  • call your insurance, some are covering the cost of doulas
  • Mine was 900 4 years ago with my first. Unfortunately, it was of no use, as the baby ended up being breech and needing a section. No refund either. Be aware that this is a possibility.
  • I live outside of Tampa, FL. The doulas around here range from $250-$600. However, if you can find birthing centers or places that do doula training and certification, you may be able to get a doula who is still in training (has attended some births, but not all to be completely qualified) at a discounted rate. The most important thing, that I was told in interviewing a doula, it doesn't matter how many births the doula's have attended so much as make sure they have attended at least one birth, that is similar to the birth you are wanting. If you want a natural birth, make sure they have attended one. Check out dona.org and good luck!
  • Mine is $350, which technically includes one visit before the birth, the birth itself, and one visit after.  However, I 'visit' with my doula often, as she is also my yoga instructor.
  • Mine is $450, includes 1-2 prenatal visits, the birth, and 1 visit after. She also writes up a birth story. She's pretty experienced, so I think it's definitely worth it. I'm in upstate NY, but I think that's about average for our area. Of course, if you get a student, it will be easier.
  • I live in central NJ, I was quoted $800 by two different doulas. Then my friend told me she needed me to get her certification, so I could use her for free. If I were you, I'd find out who does the certifying, and see if there's anyone in your corner of NJ that is in training.
