West Penn Hospital tour

I have a few questions for anyone that's delivered at West Penn

I know that it is important but DH and I are pressed for time with our jobs and was wondering if it was helpful? How long did it take? Did u find it helpful or a waste of time? just curious...we are def planning on doing it we just live 40 mins away and both work crazy hours so we want to make sure that trip down there is even worth it.

Re: West Penn Hospital tour

  • I delivered all my babies at West Penn & did go to the tour ( the first one was 12 years ago) BUT I do not see a need to go really.  I just had another baby 4 months ago as all was mostly same.  As long as you can read the sign for the EMERGENCY entrance you are good to go.  They'll just show you all the rooms that you'll go to..they have a work up room where they see if your in true labor, etc.. then move you to your L&D room on the same floor.  After baby is born they'll move you to a newly renovated recovery room on the floor above.  Then they'll show you the nursery, waiting rooms etc.. but this is all stuff you can find out the day of.  Unless you are one of those ladies who deliver quick, you should have time to check it all out.  But it is up to you..

Good luck & a happy & healthy delivery for you.

  • We did the tour during a lamaze class there.  I found that it helped to make me a little less nervous, just getting familiar with the hospital/rooms/layout/process.  I wouldnt say it is necessary, but I am glad we had a tour. Good luck!

  • I had my daughter at West Penn also.  We did the tours both there and at Magee, but as someone stated before, as long as you can find the emergency room you are good to go.  They are great there by the way.  The nurses were really friendly and the L&D room was beautiful.  Good Luck!
