I went ahead and bought a waterproof mattress cover. I think it was something like $15 from Target. Even though only 10% of women's water actually breaks, I figured spending $15 just in case was worth it.
you can buy a crib mattress cover (quilted on one side, plastic on the other). they're not too big (or small). i used them towards the end of my pregnancy but when my water broke (at 2.30am) it was a trickle so i didn't even need it. they're still good to have around... i use them for DS.
you most likely have a few water proof things for baby that you could use under you if it makes you feel better. The chances of your water breaking on its own AND breaking while in bed are extremely low. Also, your water wont smell or stain.
However, if you plan on doing "everything" on your bed, diaper changes, night nursings, etc., then I would say to go ahead and get one. Dried milk smells gross!
Do it! I am glad I did because we have a $4K Tempurpedic and I was worried about ruining it.
My water broke at 2am and I was indeed in bed. It was a huge gush that would have soaked right into the memory foam. We just put a huge sheet of plastic under our sheets though- we didn't buy a mattress pad.
We bought one and my water did break in bed but it made our bed miserably hot and didnt protect the bed 100% anyways. We had the cheap one on one of our beds where I nap and the expensive thick one on our bed. Both made me really hot and the thick plastic one still leaked.
I used a trash bag and towels... sounds ghetto but who cares. Oh and my water broke when I was sleeping... I heard a pop got up to go pee and then a gush in the toilet. Most likely you won't leak out in bed ... well mine only came out while standing or sitting up never while laying down. But it's better to be safe.
I'm using a non-fitted waterproof crib mattress protector. That way DH doesn't have to deal with it either. Not expecting to need it, but I'd rather not ruin my mattress.
I didnt have one and my water broke while i was sleeping, somehow i jumped up right away and ran to the bathroom. I didnt even get the bed wet at all. From what i understand many women dont even have their water break.
I was sleeping on my couch at the end...and started leaking all over it. Then I went to tell my DH and my water broke on my rug and it was mixed with blood (sorry tmi) cause I had some bleeding issues....and it stained my floor. All of this was fixable
I completely forgot about that, haha. I went to 42 weeks with no water breakage... I was induced with my MW breaking it for me, lol.

My water broke while I was sleeping in my bed. ?It was a huge gush but it did not come out until I stood up to go to the bathroom. ?No fluids on my mattress or sheets. ?Tons of fluid on my pants and bathroom floor. ?

I woke up to my water breaking at 4AM. The hubs was awake and handing me a towel within a second, so no ruined mattress here (and I was gushing like crazy) even though I wasn't using a mattress pad...
I didn't buy one before I had the baby, but I DID buy one after-- I feed him in bed in the morning and he throws up a lot, so I'm constantly changing sheets...I wanted to make sure we weren't destroying the mattress so I bought one at Target for 15 dollars
We have a waterproof mattress pad that is on our bed all the time. (Our cat used to get mad at me when I wouldn't let him outside. He got back at me by peeing on our bed.)
My water did break in bed and there was the POP and a GUSH but I had been wearing pads and that soaked up most of the liquid. Mine was def. not a trickle. When I got to L&D they did the test to see if there was amniotic fluid present and it came back neg. IT ALL CAME OUT! and hadn't been replaced yet.
I actually left it on even now to protect from spit-up
I have a tempurpedic, so it's absorbent and expensive, and I didn't/don't want to ruin it.

Yes. My water didn't break in bed, but it did break while I was sitting on the sofa.
Since the waterproof mattress pad costs less than $20, it's not worth the risk to not protect your mattress, even though the odds of it breaking in bed (and leaking enough with the initial gush to reach the mattress) are slim.
You will appreciate having it when your LO is a newborn. I had a newborn who spit up often, and though we didn't cosleep, I did nurse him while in bed sometimes... and he did take some naps with me in our bed... and he did spit up a LOT in bed. A couple times where it leaked through to the liner and would have gotten on to the mattress.

My water broke at 4 am and the popping noise woke me as well. I jumped out of bed so nothing got on the mattress.
