thinking of switching cell phone plans

we have verizon and get quite a few dropped calls on our end of the island.  I only call my mom (who has att), my dh and my bff on my cell (we have internet phone at home, so calls to ILs and most long distance calls are at home).  I text dh more than call during the week b/c he's working.  the only think I really feel is a need to add is gps b/c of where we live.  I keep forgetting my map book of the city at home or in the car when we go into the city and when I get detoured when driving I get lost.  so I need gps for walking and driving. email and the extras would be nice when we're traveling home (only twice a year) but not necessary. I like to have a camera on it (I take a pic of the kids when we all go into the city together or any big crowded function so I have a pic of them in their clothes, usually have the camera with me, but if not, I use the phone)

colleagues are telling me to get the iphone.  one lives near me and says the service is great (but I think she texts more than calls)... she says the 3gs is a must, not the 3g.

friends from "back home" (not here) have blackberries they love.

then another colleague showed me some (samsung?) think that has a keyboard that slides out . he loves it.

dh just wants a plain ol' phone. so we'd be getting him a plain one... maybe a smartypants phone for me. colleagues tell me we get a 20% discount at att, 10% with verizon.

so... suggestions? advice?  if I go iphone 3g enough or is 3gs so much better that you think it's a must?
