Need opinions on day care situation

My mom watches my little one during the week on a part-time basis. Her husband is a big time cigar smoker ? he smokes them all day. He never ever smokes inside the house; however their garage reeks since he stands in there and smokes. Even though the garage door is lifted while he's smoking it stills reeks. They know that I despise the smoking and they would never let my son around it but it still bothers me. What would you do in my situation? My mom can?t watch him at my house because she also watches my niece and my sister won?t go for it ? I?ve already tried. Should I put him in day care? Do you think I?m over-reacting?

    Is LO ever in the garage? I wouldn't worry about it if he's not in the garage and the smoke doesn't filter into the house. Does LO come home smelling like cigars?

    Personally, I think you are over-reacting.  Just because it reeks doesn't mean your child is inhaling the smoke.  If your LO is happy there, I wouldn't uproot him and stick him into daycare just because of a smell, but that's JMO.

    Unless your baby has some underlying health issues, like CF or asthma, Gramps smoking in the garage, away from the kiddos, isn't a huge deal. I would much much prefer to have free babysitting from my mom than paying a daycare that probably has a revolving door of employees.

    I wouldn't worry too much about it if your LO never went into the garage.

    Depends.  Does g-pa smoke outside and then come in and handle the baby without washing up and changing clothes?  If the answer is yes, then I would opt for daycare.  Second hand smoke is very dangerous and even smoke residual on clothing has been found to be harmful.

    If gpa doesn't handle baby at all, then no harm, no foul.

    My thoughts exactly.  If he does interact w/ your LO w/o changing, I'd talk to him first about it.  I wouldn't just up and mvoe to daycare w/o even telling them "this is a concern of mine".
