Nurseries and Baby Gear

Need Playroom Ideas/Help

So, I underestimated the importance or need of a playroom even at six months. I don't like DS' nursery being filled with toys and with Christmas coming up - he's going to receive a lot I'm sure. Originally we thought that we would just make part of the finished basement his play area but my office is in the basement and carrying a 22lbs + baby up and down two flights of stairs (given his room is on the second floor) is just a PIA.  The guest room that would be the best size for the playroom is already painted a beautiful purple color and I don't want to repaint it (it might work as a girls nursery in the future).   We would clear out the furniture that is in there but - any ideas on how to decorate it so that it makes it a bit more 'boy friendly' without repainting? imageimage

  • I think that it's definitely do-able with the shade of purple that you have on the walls. Just add some blacks and blues, shelves and curtains and such.

I couldn't find a play room pic of what I was thinking but here is a nursery with the same kind of colors.

  • I guess I don't see the "importance" of a playroom. We won't have a room dedicated to toys.  I say keep the toys in his nursery, but just my opinion.

I believe that a nursery/bedroom is for sleeping not for playing. We have some toys in there and do some play in there but with a crib, changing table, two chairs, a child's rocking chair, a toy box, a play mat/tunnel, and a jumperoo kind of makes for a bit of chaos.

My post wasn't asking your opinion on WHETHER I should have a play room. A play room is sorely missed in our household, so now I am moving to make it happen before the holidays.

    But uh thanks lol

I realize you weren't asking whether, I was just stating my opinion. I also didn't realize all the stuff you have in the nursery now.

I grew up differently, where all the toys stayed in our room (then again, we didn't have much). And I don't know anyone with a separate playroom.

Have you considered draping sheets either from the top of the wall or ceiling? I had a friend who did this and it turned out really cool. It would also protect the paint on the wall (so that if you do have a girl, you wouldn't have to paint it to touch it up)

I grew up with a playroom, I wish we had the kind of house I grew up in. My playroom was off of my bedroom, it was technically a sun/plant room with windows all around.

I polled this on 3-6mo and it seems this is a 50/50 thing - the concept of a playroom. I never considered it nor did I feel it was necessary until DS reached 5 months - that is when we really started to feel the need for one. Until then, his developmental toys were small and he wasn't very mobile. But now that he is getting mobile and the toys he has are getting bigger. At this age he is also starting to realize that the toys are in his room, so at bedtime he looks over at one of his toys and starts to whine for it lol Not good, when you want your LO to stick with bedtime routine.

I think the idea of draping is good and cheap! Maybe canvas or something and I could paint on it or something.

Thanks for that last idea. I grew up in the midwest and lived in KS for many years! Can't wait to get back that way.

  • Hi lady!

I agree with having a playroom too, if your home has the space for it.

I think this shade of purple is doable. What about adding black and white furniture along with shades of blue like pp mentioned? That shade of purple looks like it has some blue in it, so i think that would help. Perhaps a decal or some fun fabrics with all of the colors in it too.

Thanks! I'm feeling inspired now. I think the blue/black accents is a good idea.

  • Well I have 2 small kids and a playroom is needed because they like to play with each others stuff but have some special stuff in their rooms that they don't want to share and that will cause a fight.  But all the jumping bright fun stuff is in playroom.  I think black, blue, and purple is a great idea.  I put up small 3 level book cases so the baby can see what toys they have instead of a bunch of toy boxes they have to dig in.  check out the baby room bio website for the playroom page.
