Those who CD

A few more questions... :)

-Did you need inserts for the newborn stage? We're ordering a 3 or 6 pk of BG 3.0 AIO one-sized and saw that they come with 6 newborn inserts. Which, got me thinking, will we need inserts at this stage? I guess I was thinking we wouldn't need these until later? Will I need doublers for my PFs?

-What diaper pail bag do you use? We found a stainless steel trashcan that has a foot pedal and closing lid that we're planning on using. It is on the smaller side though, measuring only 16" deep. I'm thinking that I may have to empty this daily/every other day into a larger bin downstairs in the laundry room until I'm ready to do laundry. We were thinking of getting a PlanetWise wet bag to use in the diaper pail. The BG diaper pail bag didn't have raving reviews. Other ideas? Same concept for use in our laundry room? With the pets I want to keep it as odor-free as possible.

If I ever get the hang of all of this, I'll be happy! And we haven't even started using/folding yet! We did get our new washer and dryer which will be delivered on Tuesday, so I'm excited to start prepping this week!

  • 1. No we didn't use any doublers or inserts during the newborn stage.  I think everyone will say the same thing-- you are changing them SO often in those first two months that they won't have time to completely soak a diaper!  They are poo machines!

    2. We use a Whamies pail liner.  You are right though-- you probably will have to empty the can in the baby's room since it isn't very deep.  We originally thought that we would keep dirty diapers in the laundry room AND in the baby's room but eventually we got our routine down and we only keep them in the baby's room.  FWIW, we've never had odor problems.

Have fun prepping!  I can't say enough how happy we are that we use cloth.  We had to use disposables during 2 trips and we hated them.  We were afraid to use the disposables b/c we wondered if we would like them more than cloth!  Boy were we wrong!  We had blow outs, the diapers would fall off when they became oversaturated over night, they smelled awful....   I hope you have as much luck with cloth as we have!

I agree here too.  We didn't use any doublers or extra inserts during the newborn stage.  We were changing him after nearly every feeding.

We have a larger step trash can and use a Whamies pail liner in E's room.  I wash twice a week and his room never smells.

I also hope it works out for you as well as it has for us!

  • We used the NB inserts when he was little (otherwise you have nothing to soak the pee away fron the liner), and we still use them as doublers.

and we just got a $17 pail and Whamies pail liners. Two or three days worth fit in there.

If you're talking about BG 3.0's this is true about needing an insert.  If you're talking about BG sized AIO's then you shouldn't need any extra inserts.

  • 1 All I ever used for Colby is prefolds with a wrap.

2 we use a plastic trash can with a trash bag in it. We use diaper service and we empty the pail once a week it's about the size of a normal kitchen trash can. I have a planet wise wet bag I use when we are out and I love it.

FYI: I hated CD's for the first week or two it seemed like so much work but after I got the hang of it I fell in love with it.

  • Thanks for all of your advice. I hadn't seen the Whamies before, but that looks perfect. Looks like we'll think about a larger pail of some sort that way I don't have to transport from our second floor to basement where our laundry room is- I'm sure that would get old!

We're both really excited about CDing - we probably just need to get started on practicing the different folds! DH loves the AIO's and Kissaluvs, so it will be nice to have those as well.

As for the inserts - I was confused with the BG 3.0 versus the AIO. Currently we have an AIO, and I must have looked at the 3.0 6 pack when I saw the inserts. Now I'm torn between whether to buy the 3.0 6 pack or the Deluxe AIO pack. What is the difference, besides obviously having one diaper that changes sizes and one that we order in specific sizes? Is there any other difference? Does the 3.0 truly work with a newborn, and a smaller one at that?

  • I think it's a personal preference.  I prefer the 3.0's b/c the AIO's take forever to dry and once they fit you don't have to buy new sizes.  I did like having a few size xs and sm AIO's though b/c they were perfect for the diaper bag (compact & easy).  The 3.0's don't work until the baby is about 10lbs.

  • We borrowed some of Christina's XS BG AIOs and we did like them for the newborn stage, but I wouldn't use them beyond that age.  After he outgrew the Kissaluvs (also borrowed from Christina, thanks again!), the XS BG AIOs, and the prefolds, we moved on to using only one-sized pocket diapers (BG 3.0s, Rumparooz, Blueberry) and the BG organic AIO's.  I would try a few of each before you decide which ones to go with!  And I definitely recommend that if you're going to buy any BG 3.0s, get them off of cottonbabies.com when they have their "seconds" sales-- you can sign up for their newsletter now and they will let you know when the sale happens again.  They sell out very quickly.  I haven't noticed anything wrong with the diapers and you get them for $12 each, and that was including inserts AND shipping this last time!
  • It's really a toss up between ease of use and ease of laundry. The AIOs are a bit easier for everyone to use, but they are also more work in the laundry because all of the layers are sewn together, so it's harder to keep them super clean and they take longer to dry. Another positive of the pockets is that you can adjust the absorbency for different times(smaller babies, nighttime, etc.). Pockets always get my vote over AIOs since once they're stuffed, they still function like an AIO for you, but it's easier to wash and adjust a pocket since you can take it apart.
  • Adding another vote for the Wahmies pail liners - love them! The Planet Wise pail liners are essentially the same thing and would also do a great job. When you say wet bag, I'm thinking you mean these, and if that's what you saw and you like them, you could easily use the large hanging pail size and skip having a trash can - that would keep them up and away from animals for you, too.Plus, a hanging pail is a great space saver! Another thing you could easily use in a smaller trash can is a pillow case since it's smaller. Lots of people use them with no problems, they just wouldn't give you complete water-proofness, so you might need to wash out your pail more frequently.

You will absolutely, positively get the hang of all of this - it's amazing how it all makes sense and comes together when you can actually start using them!
