Any binkie addicts?

My DS is 13 months old and still LOVES his binkie.  We are thinking of trying to wean him soon but I fear it ::shudder::

  • DS is addicted to his and he is 20 months!  I am hoping to wean him around 2.  We are down to using it only for naps and bedtime for the most part.  He didn't even like the thing until he was seven months old!  Now I rue the day I gave it to him...

  • DD loves her binkie. She sucks on one at nighttime, and also has to hold one in her hand. I weaned my ds at 2 years and didn't have any problems with him or his teeth. I wouldn't be in too much of a hurry. At least it's a binkie and not a thumb. You can't take a thumb away, and I sucked mine until I was 11 Embarrassed

  • DS has to have one in each of his hands at night too! :)

  • Here!

We tried to wean DS a couple weeks ago but he ended up substituting with his thumb.

So, we gave him the pacifier back. I figure it'll be easier to wean him from the pacifier than trying to get him to stop sucking his thumb.

He's got ten - yes, TEN - pacifiers in his crib right now. LOL

    I like privacy. A lot.
  • Yup. We have him down to only in the crib and the car now.

  • DD still gets her paci at bedtime.  At 12 months we stopped giving it to her during the day and in the car.  That was tough for a while.  I just don't think she is ready to give it up all together.

  • DS was a binkie addict until last Sunday when he discovered that he could jam the whole binkie in his mouth.  So, we had to take it away cold turkey.  Honestly, it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be.  He cried Sunday night for about 1/2 hour to fall asleep, and then was up from 3-540am.  Monday night, he cried for 15 min to fall asleep, and slept all night.  Tuesday night, 10 min to sleep and slept all night.  Then Wednesday night, he went to sleep just fine with no tears.  So all told, it was only 3 nights that he needed to adjust to not having the binkie.  It could have been much worse!
  • We went to sleep time only at 12 months and so far she is doing great.  Sometimes she will see it and want it for a bit but I can usually take it from her.
  • I got really lucky with this.  When my DS was an infant he loved his binkie and always wanted it.  I feared the day when I would have to take it away, but one day when he was 5 months old, he just didn't want it anymore.  He hasn't had it since.

    Good luck!

  • Binkie addict here. He needs three at all times - one for his mouth and one in each hands. Dear Lord.
  • When it comes to sleeping, DD has a huge dependancy on it. If it falls out of the crib at night, she wakes up in a panic and has what seems to be an anxiety attack until one of us gets it for her. The pedi said not to worry about it until age 2 but I know it's going to be a looooooooong few nights when we try to break her from it- my guess is we should try before baby #2 comes.

  • YES.  He loves nipples.  lol

I'm not worried.  He'll grow up.
