NBR: Has anyone had a Colposcopy/Cervical Biopsy?

I have to get this on Monday and I'm a wee bit nervous... what should I expect???

I had 2 abnormal paps before my BFP... The day my colposcopy was scheduled I found out I was (surprise!!!) pregnant So my OB said we'd put it off til after I delivered and that hopefully my pap would be normal and we wouldn't have to do it.

No luck. 2 abnormal paps since DS was born.

Is it painful? What were your results? I don't want to google it and read horror stories and freak myself out so wanted to ask here instead. TIA

Re: NBR: Has anyone had a Colposcopy/Cervical Biopsy?

  • I've never had one, but I work for an ob/gyn who does them frequently. She always says take 600mg of advil 30min-60min prior, it helps soften the cervix, and helps decrease the pain, and describes it as uncomfortable rather than painful. Good luck!

  • I have had two Colposcopies, they are not painful.  It just feels like a deep, invasive pap if that makes any sense at all.  I kept waiting for pain and there wasn't any.

Good luck - I hope you get good results!

  • Ive had a colposcopy because of irregular paps and what I recall it wasnt bad...I honestly dont remember it being really any different than a regular pap...maybe a lil more uncomfortable but not anything bad at all

  • It was uncomfortable, but not painful. I did have some cramping afterward but it wasn't bad.

  • If you can handle having a cervix exam while you are pg then you will be ok for this.  You may have a little bit of cramping after and some spotting.

  • I've had two colposcopies and two biopsies.  They aren't bad at all.  A little uncomfortable, but not painful. With the biopsy, there will be a quick pinch - but it's very, very quick and not too painful. Take advil beforehand to help with cramping afterward.

Both times I've had them done, there has been no serious issue - just having to follow up with repeat PAPs every six months until I get a clear one.

     Good luck.

    Ditto this - exactly.

  • I thought it just felt like cramping while she was doing the procedure, and then I had mild cramping and discomfort for the rest of the day.  Nothing to worry about.  Good luck!
