Babies: 9 - 12 Months

s/o judging moms - re: cold weather.

yesterday at target, it was windy - starting to drizzle as i was walking out and just plain windy.

i had L in her carrier and had a hat on her - a blanket covering her and a blanket covering the carrier.

a mom was walking in with a 1ish year old sitting in the cart seat - just a sweatshirt on. didnt even think to put the hood up yet she was wearing a coat.

she got a big fat side eye from me. Hmm

Re: s/o judging moms - re: cold weather.

  • My kids never wear coats in the winter. Only to play outside. I have 3 kids, it's not safe to put a coat on in the carseat, I don't feel like spending 30 minutes putting coats on every time we get out of the car, and they're not going to turn into icicles going from the car to the store in 15 degree weather. We run. Oh, well. Judge me.

  • Depending on what you call *cold*, DS doesn't wear a coat unless it's in the 40's. He and I are both very warm blooded. I've taken him out in drizzle wind with just a sweat shirt on. I didn't leave him out there for hours, so I don't see the problem.

    Judge away if you will.

i understand you not wanting to put a coat on with the carseat. but even without coats - i wouldve put a hat on the kid or even put the hood up on the sweatshirt to block the wind from his ears -- that doesnt interfear with the seat.

  • Eh, it's not like the kid is going to catch the flu from not having his hood up.
  • For real? Just to go from car to store? I wouldn't bother putting a big coat on him, either. You get an eyeroll from me.

he might not catch the flu, but imo if I'm wearing a coat, so is my baby.  it's not like he can communicate that he's cold, so i just assume he is.

  • Meh. It's not like she was trekking across town. She was going from her car to the store.

  • How cold is cold?  I don't put a coat on kiddo either to go from the car to the store.  And you may see me in more layers than he has on because, baby or not, he's always warmer than I am.  Hats are good though; however, kiddo often pulls his hood or hat off - and it's not worth fighting him to keep it on to walk 20 yards.

exactly. i was told dress baby in 1 layer more than yourself..

DS would get heat stroke if I followed that rule. We layered him when he came home from the NICU and continued to do so until he was 2 months, but now he wears less than I do, most days. He's a ball of heat is all.

I don't think that rule necessarily applies once you are past the newborn stage.  Like I said before, kiddo runs warmer than I do.  If I bundle him up and he feels warm, I'm not going to make sure he's wearing more than me or the same as me.

That is really only for newborns. By the time baby is 3 mos old, you can dress him as you are dressed.

    ?

I'm pretty sure that rule of thumb is for newborns because they can't regulate their own body temperature.

It doesn't get really cold here, but we rarely have a jacket on DS when running to and from the car. I completely agree with GHM.

She was going from the car to a store. If it was a 30 minute walk, fine, but the car to the store. How far could that have been? Hop down off the high horse.

  • What exactly is wind in the ears going to do? Confused

It's 30 seconds to and from a store. I'm really not worried. I can find a million more things to concern myself with besides who covers their babies ears.

By the way, congrats on your mother of the year award. Yes

    I agree

There are a lot of things to judge people about, but this? No

I don't do coats unless we are going outside to play for a long period. And hats, oh hell no they are the biggest waste of money for my kids. They won't even keep a dang hat on, not even a hood from a sweatshirt. Also my DS is a chunky monkey he has  a lot to keep him warm and is warm blooded like DH.If i dress him warm he is misserable. I however am always cold and 9 times out of 10 I am dressed a lot warmer than my kids.

When they're a newborn, absolutely. They can't regulate their own temperature at that age.  The kid your talking about is a year old. He should be okay wearing something similar to what his mom or dad is wearing. Not having his hood up for a walk from car to store isn't a big deal.

  • See, this seems just plain dumb.  My family is exactly like you, and many other moms I know.  During the late winter my ds had the doc band ( a helmet) to fix his plagiocephaly.  He was ALWAYS so warm, he actually still gets really warm, he's like his dad.  People were always saying, you need to dress him warmer, why doesn't he have socks on blah blah...so I dressed him warmer, he ended up with a huge heat rash, yes in the winter, because i thought I was a bad parent.  Well you know what, not everyone's baby is the same...it doesn't make anyone a bad parent.  I can put a hat on my son's head, or socks on all day long and they won't stay on for longer than 30 seconds before he takes it off.

  • You sound nutzo. How could could it have been for that 30 seconds? I'm in MN. It gets below zero here. My kids wear fleece for the car seat and if it's REALLY cold, that's all they wear when running between car/store/house etc. They have blankets in the car and if its more than just a quick run from car to wherever, they have regular winter jackets.
  • alright, it was 52 yesterday in NEPA.  drizzle or no drizzle, my kid would not have had on anything more if we were just going in/out of a store!  come on.  if my kid were in all the layers yours was, he'd have died of heatstroke, or at the very least been a crabby mess.  this is not judgeworthy, in the least.

If it's raining I make sure that DD has her hood up, but this amount of clothing, blankets, etc. sounds a little excessive to me. Unless it was below freeezing yesterday where you live.

  • It was drizzling and in the 40s today when I took my son out of the car and walked into the store. I took the time to put a coat on him before we got out of the car. It took all of 30 seconds.

Good for you for looking out for your kid's comfort.

LOL. My kids don't complain. Besides that, you only have one kid, so your opinion hardly counts. Come back when you have more than one to take care of. I can assure you that it would take more than 1.5 minutes total. You can be such an awesome mom when you have one kid.

For now, if not putting a coat on my kids makes me an awful parent, I'm cool with that.
