Seeing vs. Hearing heartbeat

Is there a difference (i.e. does hearing it mean it's that much stronger)?  We've seen it at our last 2 ultrasounds (at 6w2d and 7w6d) but the technicians never mentioned hearing anything... does it depend on the u/s machine?  Or can you not hear anything that early?

Re: Seeing vs. Hearing heartbeat

  • They used the doppler to hear the HB with me. Not sure if the u/s picks up the HB noise or not??? Sorry.

At my 9 wk they couldn't pick anything up with the doppler. No worries, I have an inverted uterus could be awhile before LO decides to cooperate :)

  • We were able to do it with the u/s but I think it was about 10 weeks.

I think it is just too early.

  • With our u/s we didn't hear the h/b, but we had with a doppler at our appoint the week before.  It probably depends on the machines.  Plus it's still kind of early for you.

  • all the machines can "hear" the heartbeat- just not all techs are comfortable putting extra "pressure" on baby's forming heart.   They leave it up to the doctors to decide if it's necessary- the techs have another way to measure baby's heart rate (it's a tracing called m-mode) and is very safe for baby.

  • I heard the heartbeat at 8w6d- she couldn't use the internal u/s to get it though (or that's what she told me), she said she needed to use a different tool but I'm not sure exactly what it was. I heard you can't really hear it until later on but you can see it at 7 weeks.

this. its not the same as the doppler detecting it, its not the actual hb you are hearing from my understanding. Either way its cool!

  • We heard the hearbeat at 7w4d beating at 154bpm Big Smile
  • most US machines dopplers are very powerful and can possibly damage the baby so they usually wait until later to use the US machine to listen. It is possible to listen with most, but due to the fact that they have pretty powerful dopplers ( for ruling out DVT's and such) it's better safe than sorry with listening to your baby!

  • At my 9 wk appointmenr we could not hear the heartbeat on the doppler, but my OB said that was very normal and that sometimies you cant hear it until 12 weeks. We saw the heartbeat on the u/s at 6w 6d...I hope everything is ok!!
