Re: heartburn helpppppppppp

  • I had to start taking prilosec before I got any relief. It was horrible (I mean acid burning my throat till it bled horrible). And it still bugs me when I eat certain foods. But much better than before.

  • Mine was so bad my dr put me on prilosec.  For immediate results I would recommend ice cream or milk.  We also propped up the head of the bed by a couple of inches and that helped a lot as well.
  • I take Zantac 150 up to twice a day as noted on the bottle and approved by my Dr. I've heard some ladies say they got relief form  Papaya enzyme  and dairy. The dairy never worked for me. And I don't have to have anyting in my stomach for the heartburn to "come up". Sometimes just changing position spurred it.

  • I was just laying down when the burping up acid started. ?Now that I am sitting up, it seems to have stopped. ?I still feel the "burning," but at least I am not burping anything up anymore!!!

What is the maximum amount of Tums allowed? ??

  • I take pepcid or zantac twice a day. It is such a life saver!!

In a pinch like OP mentioned, milk or ice cream. what works for me is a small glass of milk mixed with a tablespoon of sugar and drink it like a shot.

THe milk coats your stomach and esophagus while the sugar helps settle the acid.

  • Depends on the strength of the tums. Never more than twenty. Stick with eight or less if possible.

(Eating too many tums can cause an electrolyte imbalance...hypercalcemia/hypomagnesemia)

  • The milk/sugar idea sounds like a good idea, but as a diabetic, I'm not sure if I want to trade heartburn for high blood sugar!

  • Milk to help right away, but get Prilosec or Zantac stat!  I have to take two a day or I'd be miserable.  And FWIW...my worst heartburn/acid reflux (before I started meds) was brought on by water!
  • Milk will help, but only temporarily.

Zantac 150 has saved my life.  I take 1 every 12 hours on the nose.  I can tell you exactly when it's 10pm and 10am because if it's ONE minute after either time, I get acid burps.

Yet another reason I can't wait until Thursday.  I can't wait to see if this little guy has hair or not..I've had such horrible heartburn...kinda wanna see if the OWT is true.

  • Try a tsp or so of apple cider vinegar.

  • Several people suggested milk/ice cream.  FYI - milk products make my heartburn worse.  The only thing that helped me was Pepcid (and it was immediate and amazing).  Recently, my ob told me to buy the generic (Famotidine) at Sams and to take 20 mg 2x per day....even when I felt good.  It has been a life saver and was much cheaper than the Pepcid.

    Good luck!

  • Ok I just ate some ice cream (all the while my kitten was crying for some... she is a nut!) and took 2 more Tums. ?Cross your fingers that this works.....

  • try to keep burping, that will help to relieve some of the pressure.

Try some papaya enzyme chews (you can get them at places like whole foods/sprouts) it's a natural alternative to tums.

Try some peppermint tea (it always helps mine)

    or some dairy.

Good luck, I know how bad it stinks ! I've thrown up a few times from mine getting so bad
