3rd Trimester

I am NOT the mean nurse!!

I really hate being called "the mean nurse" by a baby's parents/grandparents/loved ones. If you sign the consent for the vaccine, I have to give your baby a shot. I have to listen to it's heart. I have to take it's temperature. Your baby is going to cry no matter what because it doesn't have any other way to respond to it's new environment. It does not equate to me being MEAN. I'm nice! I love babies! I bet your baby will cry when you change it's diaper too! That doesn't equate to you being a mean mommy.

Sigh. Just doing my job people.

  • Um.. there is a difference in what you do.. and being a "mean" nurse... I'd say you're far from mean!?

  • couldn't have said it better myslef!
  • I'm sorry Sad I was a medical assistant and it was always so horrible drawing blood from anyone younger than 18, because I always felt like total crap about it.

  • LOL.  I actually do call myself a "mean, mean mommy" when DD gets mad about diaper changes.  I own it.  It it makes me mean to make my kid clean and healthy.... Sure.  I'm mean.  Terrible person, me. Wink
  • I always feel bad for our nurses when they give our kids their shots.  The nurses hate doing it, and yes, it's part of the job, but it breaks their hearts too.

  • Amen!

I also love when parents tell their kids who aren't getting shots "be good or I'll make the nurse give you a shot".  Yeah, that's super helpful, make the kid scared of nurses, awesome.  Indifferent

  • Hehe... I totally know what you mean! I am a peds RN and had a 10 year old patient who was refusing to take tylenol elixer (she was a 10 day post tonsilectomy admited for dehydration) because it tasted nasty. She was holding on to the side rails crying and screaming like a 2 year old.  I told her she was 10 years old and she was gonna take it or I was going to get another nurse to hold her head while I squirted it down her throat. Well she eventually took it, but it took her 20 minutes. Her grandma later told her mother that she would go kick that mean nurses butt for her.  Um.. Okay so I could have used a little more tact, but she is 10 freaking years old! Seriously if it had been my kid I'd have told him to take the damn medicine and knock that crap off!
