Settle an argument between DH and me

Do you loosen the shoulder straps on the convert. carseat each time you take DC out of the car and then tighten them again when you put DC back into the carseat?

Or

Do you just leave the straps tight and struggle to get DC back into the carseat each time?

Re: Settle an argument between DH and me

  • I leave them, but it's really not that much of a struggle to get him back into the seat. The way the chest clip buckles, it tightens everything up without having to re-pull the loose end of the strap aprt.

  • Most of the time I leave them unless he's in a heavier jacket or something. DH always loosens them.
  • Leave them - I think it would be more of a pain to loosen them every time and then tighten. I'm not even sure how I would loosen it without unhooking the seat altogether.

It really isn't that big of an issue to get him in with it being tightened up - obviously every once in awhile we have to loosen it as he grows.

This doesn't mean that your DH is 'right' just means he might be in the majority. The right thing to do MIGHT be to loosen and re-tighten each time but that doesn't mean that we all do it that way. lol

  • It's really easy to loosen the straps on our seat, but I usually leave it the same unless he's wearing a coat, then I loosen it.

  • I didn't know option 2 was an option! I thought you were supposed to re-tighten the straps every time. I always loosen them and then re-tighten  when I put DD in the car. The Britax makes the process easy enough.

  • We leave them tight, but we dont have to struggle to get them in. Tightening the straps can be difficult so it's easier to simply leave them at the correct tightness. Why would it be a struggle?
  • Just a quick note for those who said they only loosen the straps when their LO is wearing a jacket:

Heavy jackets can compress in a crash which will then make the straps too loose, so it's safest not to use them in the car seat. If you have to loosen the straps to buckle with a jacket, then you know the jacket is too thick. You can use a fleece jacket (LL Bean and Lands End have nice ones) for the carseat and then you can put a blanket or their thick jacket on them backwards.

Ditto. Normally she's in the same amount of clothes so why would I loosen and then re-tighten to the exact same spot?

  • I loosen and then tighten. It's easier especially in this weather when some days requires a jacket or sweater and some days don't.

Either way, there is no "right" way. You do what works for you and have DH do what works for him!

  • i loosen and re-tighten every time, we have the evenflo trimph advance with the turn dial so it's not hard to adjust the straps
  • I leave them.  I'm too lazy to loosen and tighten every time.

  • We loosen and tighten every time. He's far too squirmy to deal with putting him in with it tight.

Ditto.  This really isn't a right or wrong.  DH and I both loosen.  I left them tight once by accident, and it was actually annoying to get him bacik in.  Once I realized it, I loosened them again.

  • I loosen and tighten each time, in both of his car seats (my car and DH's).

  • I loosen and tighten because the fit differs a bit depending on whether she's in a cloth diaper or disposable.

  • We loosen and tighten.  If we had a seat where it was a pain then we would leave it but it's easy with our seat.  Like another poster, DS is way too squirmy so it works best for me to loosen first.
