Playroom organization?

What kind of toy box/bins/shelves do you have?  I need to get our playroom under control.

Also, do you keep any toys in your DC's room?  If so, which ones?  We have a bookshelf with books and her American Girl doll in her room but everything else is in her playroom.  I'm not sure if I want to put anything else in there or not.

Re: Playroom organization?

  • We have one of these and it holds an impressive amount.  We have one of these (secured to the wall) for all her Little People (well, most of them, at least).  We have our TV on one of these and store all her books on the middle open shelves.  We have her dolls and stuffed animals in a big plastic tub like you'd use for ice and drinks at a party.  We don't keep very many toys in her room, but we also try to keep her toys to a fair number in general.  My main problem right now is all the doll stuff--the stroller, bed, etc.--if anyone has ideas for that!

  • We have this from Ikea:

We put it on its side and put black bins in it. We just cram all her toys (sometimes we organize it, but it doesn't last long) and you can't see them to see how messy it is :). It looks clean and modern and it bolts to the wall. They make larger version. We have this size and use it as a bookshelf but again, Ikea sells bins that fit for toys and it also bolts to the wall:

Both are cheap, come in birch, black, or white, and have held up remarkably well. The one above I have had for over 5 years now and have moved from three different places and it still looks brand new. I really like Ikea's kid's organization stuff because it doesn't have to look too "playroom-y" if you know what I mean (important to me because our playroom can be seen from most of the first floor). It can just look like nice furniture.

We line up her big toys along the back wall and just put them back every night. DD likes the playroom a lot.

  • When I was growing up, my parents organized our playroom with a system similar to teacherjess's.  They had different bins for different things and labeled what went in each box.  It worked, and I believe our toys are still organized into those boxes today.  My dad hasn't touched them, and he's offered to clean up our legos (the mid sized ones) and bring them down for Brandon.  Then, the "bigger" things like the Barbie play house, play kitchen, etc... were just set up in different areas in our playroom (aka part of the basement).
