My husband and I were talking today about my sadness in not being able to eat sunny side up eggs anymore. I have read that I can't eat undercooked eggs, but then I was thinking, what about egg yolk in ingredients lists? I was shocked to see egg yolk is in ice cream! This is serious news! And, lots of chip dips have egg yolk in the ingredients. Has anyone asked their dr about this? Anyone know the rules about this one? I have also read that eating peanut butter while pregnant can cause the baby to allergic to peanuts. Anyone know the facts on this one? Thanks!
Re: Rules about eating egg yolks? Peanut butter?
I ate over easy eggs this morning and they were delicious.
It's entirely personal preference. Undercooked eggs carry a salmonella risk, which is true even if you're not pg.
I don't have any scientific information about the peanut butter thing, but I generally consider it to be a myth. If that were the case, my DD would be allergic to peanut butter, strawberries, and all of the other major allergens.
Do some research and ask your doc.
I've stayed away from products with egg yolk - it's been miserable - so many things have egg yolk!!!
My dad's an allergist - I called and left a message about the peanut butter - my first thought would be that it's a myth...asking the best doc I know though
This.
I've never heard PB carries a risk during pg. Had it all the time and DD's just fine
I eat PB all the time. And make sre your eggs aren't undercooked and you're good.
I ate a ton of PB with my first and I'm eating a ton now.
My son is not allergic to peanuts/peanut butter. That is seriously the most rediculous thing I've ever heard.

Oddly enough I saw something recently that said if you avoid all these things while pregnant that's what can actually cause an allergy to children. They believe that's why more children are becoming allergic because women are being told to avoid so many things. ie: eggs, pb etc.... I've eaten eggs over easy and PB and I will continue to do so. My thought is how many of our mother's were not told to avoid things like lunchmeat, eggs etc. and we all turned out o.k.
Wow! You have a good connection!! Thanks!
Apparently the idea wasnt always considered redic. I just looked up some stuff about it, and until last year the American Academy of Pediatrics recommended avoiding peanuts during pregnancy and breastfeeding... hmmm...

Supposedly, they believe if you already have alleregies to PB in your family, eating while pg can cause your child to develop an alleregy to PB. There are risks to eating all foods, so if we followed all of them, we would not eat, food poisoning, bacteria, etc. Did they have all these rules when our parents were born, no. And to be honest, I think they had less medical issues than any of the children born in the generation.
I am eating PB, and runny eggs. I have eaten soft cheeses and smoked salmon (only 1 or 2 times). I think you need to take the info and decide for yourself what is best for you.
I think those that used to say not to eat pb while breastfeeding, etc didn't want you to end up harming a baby that was allergic to it. Although I wasn't breastfed, I have always been allergic to peanuts, but I was just fine in the womb of my mom that ate pb....
I think it's fine.
Yeah, the latest immunology research seems to indicate that early exposure (I don't know about in the womb early, but definitely early childhood) to common allergens tends to PROTECT from developing allergies.
And, normally, I will only eat raw egg products if they're involved in cookie dough or brownie batter
(because of the salmonella thing). But when we went to visit my parents earlier this month & I didn't eat any, my mother raised such a ruckus that I thought I was going to have to fess up to our TTC right then & there!
Salmonella risk from raw eggs is completely exaggerated.
Salmonella is found in about one in every 30,000 eggs.
Exactly. Also, salmonella lives more on the shells of eggs than in the whites or yolks. You're actually more likely to get sick from not washing your hands after handling eggshells than from eating cookie dough or runny eggs.
I have eaten every single food on the "forbidden" foods list.
I remain unconcerned. It is all about moderation.
ETA: My mom gave birth to 5 kids and said she craved peanut butter with all of us. None of us have a peanut butter allergy.
I love my eggs sunny side up at times..and when I want them that way, thats how I make/get them.
I also love PB & J sandwiches....and when I want one... I eat.
Not everything is bad for you just because you are pregnant...its moderation and logic.
I think the PB thing is also ridiculous, and ate a LOT of it in my first pregnancy (and I'm sure I will again). My pediatrician said there is new research saying we should expose kids to PB waaaaaay before their 1st birthday to help avoid these allergens. I'm interested to see how much things change between the last baby and this one!
As far as egg yolks, I ate an entire container of Ben and Jerry's before I noticed the egg yolk in the ingredients list. I called them, and they said they use pasteurized eggs and the ice cream goes through a couple more pasteurizing processes beyond that as well.
The CDC (if you look up salmonella) says there is no link to mass-produced ice cream and salmonella outbreaks; you only have to worry about home-made stuff.
HTH!
Raw eggs= bad
Ice cream = some recipes have eggs in them and if you are buying your ice cream from a store then the eggs are cooked, so your ok. If its homemade ice cream I would see how its made. My family boils the eggs/sugar mixture so the eggs are cooked, DH's family does not. This is probably the same with a lot of foods.
Peanuts: I was told unless the allergy runs in your/dhs family then its fine.
I didn't say that last thing that someone quoted me as saying :-P
I just remembered when I went home to visit my parents last pregnancy. My mom made me an egg over easy for breakfast on Saturday morning. I didn't know if I should be more upset that she was trying to feed her pregnant daughter a runny egg, or that she had forgotten that I've NEVER eaten my eggs that way, lol. It was nasty. I ate *most* of it to be polite, hahaha

With DS I ate eggs and all wheat products and he is allergic to both. I really don't believe there is a correlation though. I also ate PB and he is not allergic to any type of nuts.
I asked my DS' allergist if there is anything I should avoid this pg and she said no. The thing with egg yolk is that it should be throughly cooked. BTW with egg allregy it's usually the whites not the yolk that the allergy is to.
If I am correct, you can have pb during pregnancy with no risk of baby having a peanut allergy, but breastfeeding is a different story.
PB, strawberries, etc are a no-no when breastfeeding....
Nope, you are not correct.
This.
This is wrong. Nuts can be eaten in moderation. Berries are fine.
