Hey all,I posted this on 0-3, but I thought someone here might have advice, too. I'm pretty worried about my LO. She's 11 days old and my doctor recommended that I stop breast feeding her and start formula feeding. We were already supplementing her with 1.5 ounces all the time anyway. Well, she hasn't had a BM since yesterday morning, she's extremely fussy, and is eating not once ever two hours, but every hour. And she's taking about 2 ounces each time! Is this normal for transitioning a baby to formula, or is this abnormal? Thanks so much...mb
Re: Formula, frequency, and constipation...
Why in god's name would your pedi tell you to stop BF?? Even if LO only gets a little BM, she gets the benefits! So...first off, I'd find a new pedi.
At all days, my milk had barely come in. I used a breast pump to get my supply up. Try pumping every two-three hours for 20 minutes -- even if nothing comes out. It took about a week, but I was soon producing about three - four ounces every two to three hours. Now, I make 6-7 every three hours.
As for the constipation, it's normal for breastfed babies to go a few days without a BM. It'll come out, don't worry. As long as she's still wetting diapers she should be ok.
Seriously though, find a new pedi. I started to exclusively pump because breastfeeding wasn't working out. We supplemented for the few weeks, but now DS gets exclusively BM. Seriously. NEW PEDI.
Good luck! Feel free to PM me with specific questions about building supply.
I'm curious as to why your doctor recommended you to stop breast feeding?
And the pooping thing is definatly normal.. Little ones can sometimes go for a few days without having a BM
LO's go through a growth spurt around 10 days, so that's probably why your LO is eating more often and cranky. DD when 2 days with no poop at that age too - her pedi said it's normal b/c their intestines are growing so fast that it takes longer for the poop to travel through her system. She told me to give her 1/2 oz of pedialyte in between feedings until she went. I used a q-tip with vaseline and stimulated her that way.

Although worrisome, but pooping is okay. I called my pediatrician when DD was about this age for the same reason. She said that babies can go days without pooping. If LO seems uncomfortable, try rotating her legs (bicycle) to get rid of some of the gas and move things along.
I hate to pass judgement on pedi's - I'm sure that there is a good reason for them recommending that you switch to formula. Mine did when DD was dropping weight and pumping, supplementing, etc. wasn't working. I can tell you that if this is the case for you, it was the best decision we ever made. DD was a whole new baby when she was fed and satisfied. If LO is eating a lot more than you think is normal, it could just mean that there's some catching up to do. GL and keep us posted!
