DD is soooooooooooooooooooooo constipated. She keeps trying and trying to go and nothing! The pedi recommened prune juice, but she just spit that out. Any suggestions on how to help her?
We didn't like prune juice - it's strong stuff and I felt like it was hard on his tummy. After trying several things, we found that miralax worked the best.
We did glycerin suppositories for Robbie. They used them in the NICU and it's what our doc recommended. He never had hard poops, he just couldn't get them out well.
We used Miralax too. The doctor told us 1 capful at their 6 month appt., but they were pretty big guys. She also said to only use as much as what works and we found 1 tsp./day was enough. I would call and ask the pedi for a dosage.
For whatever reason DD stopped pooping a month or two ago. We do juice daily now, 1oz straight of either Apple Purne, Pear or Apple. DD used to struggle with the prune juice but she has adjusted to the taste and now I think it is her favorite. DD poops every couple of days now which is much better than 1x per week!
We had major constipation issues when they first came home from the NICU b/c they were on iron and then again when DD started rice cereal. We made sugar water by boiling 2 ounces of water and dissolving 1/2 tsp. on sugar in the water. Worked every time. Good Luck!

For Miralax, we used 1 TBSP mixed in 4 oz of milk. This was only 1/2 what the doctor prescrbied and we find a little goes a long ways. I would maybe call and get a rec for a starting dosage...and it's always better to start with less and work your way up than give to much and have a diahhrea/dehydration problem. (We had that happen once with another medicine.)
Glycerin suppositories work okay too, and we used those for a while, but the doctor didn't want us to use them on a regular basis.
We used prune juice but sometimes would mix it with a bit of water or mix it in with his oatmeal. The pedi said juices beginning with "P" were good - prune and pear were the only ones I can remember. It's the sugar in the juice that is supposed to give them relief. Our pedi also told us to use PediaLax glycerin suppository gel. We would only use about half of the gel in the applicator. That stuff works wonders!
ditto the miralax we would use between 1/4-1/2 of a capful in her evening bottle and it did wonders for her. start small, you can always work up to a larger amount.
