What happened to your planned time off post-birth? Did you still get to take the same amount you had planned or do you now have to go back earlier? Did your STD plan cover both before and after birth given the circumstances? I guess I'm just wondering what to expect if they really do wind up pulling me next week.
Technically, you're only protected from FMLA for 12 weeks (this includes bedrest time). And so this is something you might want to discuss with your boss. When I had DD, maternity leave was covered separately from STD. I was on bedrest for 4 weeks and stayed home 12 weeks after the baby came. This time, the company is more strict with their leave policy and it is monitored under STD. And so if I am put on bedrest that will be covered by STD. Depending on how I have the baby and no other complications, I get 6 weeks for vag and 8 weeks for c-section. Anytime after that, I won't get paid. Anytime over 12 weeks, I'm not protected from FMLA, but I'm pretty close to my bosses and they'll probably be okay with me being gone if I choose to.
thanks! I don't think they would fire me if I wind up being out more than 12 weeks (at least I hope not seeing as I have been there since I got out of school and always had the highest reviews possible). It's a little scary to think about the possibility!
pp is right, fmla starts from the time you are out.
My post-birth time isn't affected at all. I have 90 calendar days of paid STD pre-birth (plus any sick time if i need it) and then 18 weeks paid after birth, (plus any vacation time). STD doesn't cover any post-birth leave at my job, so i couldn't have used it anyway.
STD covered my 8 weeks of bedrest and then my job covered the 8 weeks of recovery post csection. I was supposed to get 4 weeks of parental leave as well, but was not entitled since my babies passed away after birth. My boss was fine with me taking extra time off and I took another 5 weeks (vacation/unpaid)
When I was preg with DD#1 I had only been with the company for 10 mos so FMLA did not apply to me. My boss and HR agreed to my 12 weeks unpaid leave. I was put on bed rest for 6 weeks prior to delivery. Therefore, I was required to go back to work when DD would have been 6 weeks. This is one of the many reasons I decided to be a SAHM while on maternity leave.
Look into your benefits and see if you have supplimental leave. Like all the PP's your FMLA will start when you are out unless you are able to work from home. But if you need to be off more than 12 weeks you might have the option of supplimental leave.
I'm in Canada, and my work covered Short Term Disability until the baby came, then I had 52 weeks of Maternity Leave from the date of birth. I think I got lucky.
My company provides me with STD that covers me before and after the birth. My time off begins as soon as I am taken out of work for medical reasons. Right now I will be taken out at 37 weeks because of an incompetant cervix. If my little boy comes early then I will get my full 12 weeks with him, but otherwise every day is a day off my time with him. It is a dilema because I want to be able to spend as much time with him as possible, but I also don't want him to come too early and face health issues.
I was pulled at 22w because my boss wanted me to work direct care with combative, behavioral clients and my OB wrote restrictions that I couldn't do restraints (normally a Supervisor.)
My EDD is 12/19 and right now baby is breech so it'll be a c-section. 8w is standard, which puts me at almost 6m off work.
12w FMLA
Nov 13th-baby: personal leave @ work
Baby-6w post-partum: MN Parental Leave Act (operates like FMLA)
6w post-partum to return to work: personal leave @ work
