I have a 4wk old he is 8lbs 12oz (as of today!). Our pedi told us to use cloth diapers bc of his sensitive skin and he's already had horrible diaper rashes. We use Earth's Best diapers/wipes right now but he wants us to change.
What cloth diapers are good for newborns this small?
Re: what cloth diaper is good for newborns?
There is a ton of good info on here: https://theecofriendlyfamily.blogspot.com/
And youtube has great vids for learning prefold folding techniques.
When your little one gets a bit older, and bigger, Bumgenius One Size are great!
I really prefer the Prorap brand wrap, the Super Whisper Wrap, and of course wool soakers (but are much more $ than a PUL, polyurethane lining, wrap).
Welcome to cloth diapering! Its a whole world unto itself and we're here to support you!
This is a bit overwhelming
So as far as the kissaluvs, what do I buy? how many?
What else do I need for cloth diapering?
Kissaluvs = "fitted" diaper. This means it "Fits" on them like a disposable but you need a cover.
Each diaper, if bought new, is about 17 bucks. If used, it depends but it doesn't sound like you're in a position to search for used diapers.
Prefolds (which I used exclusively until about 11 mo old) = a diaper you fold onto the child and secure with a snappi (https://www.amazon.com/Snappi-Cloth-Diaper-Fasteners-Snappis/dp/B001EH4W6G/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=baby-products&qid=1256958769&sr=1-1) to fit on your child. Each diaper new is 1.50 each (yes, one dollar fifty cents) and snappis are about 2.50 each but you reuse snappis from change to change. I really prefer Indian Prefolds (https://www.cottonbabies.com/product_info.php?cPath=28&products_id=277) because they are softer and unbleached.
Cotton babies is a great site for information on cloth diapering.
Covers are about 9-14.00 each.
Prorap: https://www.cottonbabies.com/product_info.php?products_id=284
Super Whisper: https://www.cottonbabies.com/product_info.php?products_id=92
Thirsties Duo (new kind, I don't own any but will for #2): https://www.cottonbabies.com/product_info.php?cPath=36&products_id=2074
You reuse covers. If any poop get on them, I would hand wash in the sink, dry and use the next change. You rotate your covers throughout the day.
Really check out the eco friendly family blog for info along with Cotton Babies.
You'll need some kind of diaper pail. Some prefer spendy things, I use an 8.00 snap-on lid (looks like an old fashion galvanized trash can but in white plastic) from Walmart without a liner, each time I do laundry, I rinse with 1/2 c vinegar and fill with water. Never smell issues.
You'll need a few wet bags - Etsy.com has a ton of cute ones that are homemade.
You may want to consider cloth wipes - just cheap washcloths from target (6 pack for 2.50ish) and a wet solution. I just use water but some put a drop or two of baby oil or essential oils.
Vinegar will become your friend!
You will also want to make sure you're using a "clean" laundry detergant. I used Kirkland's Eco Laundry Soap from Costco but its a very personal choice - everyone on here has a preference.
You won't want to use any petrolium based diaper creams, nor will you want to use a lot of "traditional" creams as they can damage the diaper. I'm pretty sure the Eco Family blog has a list of good ones for CD's.
That's all I can think of right now.
DS is almost 6 weeks old. Our newborn stash included 24 orange edge prefolds from Green Mountain Diapers, 3 snappis (I got them used from Jillian's Drawers), 6 covers from Abby's Lane (2 extra small Thirsties, 1 newborn Bummis Super whisper Wrap and 3 newborn proraps), 3 kissaluv size 0s and 5 XS Thirsties fab fitteds... and two bumGenius all-in-ones.
We are just now moving up to our next size diapers and covers though. DS was 10 lbs and 1 oz at his appt Monday- averaging 1.6 oz of growth each day since birth.
