Housing - What $174,900 Will Get You

Found this site that shows what the average cost of a house will get you around the US.  Thought I'd share after seeing quite a few threads lately about buying houses.

  • That will get you maybe a 2b1b townhouse with thin walls, 1 parking spot & entry level carpet, appliances & cabinets where I live. That is why we still live in a apt.

  • In Connecticut that would get you a cardboard box!  The roof would be extra!
    Our miracle IVF baby - D 6/09 & J - Surprise! born 9/10!!!
  • That would get you a semi-decent fixer upper/older model in our area.

    Yes Texas rocks.

  • That site makes me cry.  I was reading yesterday about the new terms of the First Time Home Buyers credit extension that will hopefully go through shortly.  It has a price limit of $800k.  That sucks because I'm not sure we'll qualify.  $800k around here will not necessarily get us anyplace I would want to live.  Well, that's not quite true.  It'll get us a house in a liveable neighborhood, but it will definitely need some remodeling.  :(

    Yes

  • LOL $175K would get you a studio co-op where I live.

BTW, highest property taxes in the country.   Yup.

  • They don't have my city on there (San Diego, Ca.) probably because they couldn't find a house in that price range.  It is so expensive here.
  • They don't have Anchorage (or the entire state of AK) on there - but I'm not sure if 174.9k would get you a house. Townhomes and bigger condos in my neighborhood are going for that price - our condo is 730 square feet, 2br/1bath and we paid about $145,000 for it last year.
  • That's what we spent on our house 3 years ago....and we have a 1700 sq foot 3bd, 2 bath house.  Just normal.  That's about the average house around here... well nowadays, you could probably get a little nicer for that price!

  • It makes me sick to my stomach when I think about trying to buy a decent house in southern cali.
  • I'm going to go hurl now.

That would have got you buttkiss in my hometown where I just moved from.

ditto that for Southern Cal. lol

  • Uh yeah, that would not even get you a tiny empty lot next to a gas station around here. And this is why I live in a tiny condo! But at least it's sunny almost year round, must be why we stay.

  • I went from that amount or less giving you a nice sized home with some land to adding a mil to it for an apartment in NYC. I am not really sure that you could anything where we live now for that amount - apartments here are even in the half a mil range because we are on the train line into the city. Craziness.
  • I like the house in New Orleans and the one in Detroit.

I agree w/ the above about California. One reason I am excited about moving. Here we could afford a tiny ugly dump in Orange County. In Seattle we can afford a historic house w/ 2,000 SF w/ 4 bedrooms and a water view. Still expensive compared to rest of the country, but not compared to CA or the NY tri-state area.

  • This make me feel so sick-ish. We took the plunge and bought this year. We lived in the south for a short period of time and the homes were so gorgeous (and dirt cheap!). Our house is teeny and in need of major updating but there is NO way we can afford to do that at this point.

  • Uhh, I don't know what neighborhood they found that house in for Austin, but you can't get anything like that in the city limits for $174,900. Our house is similar (4B, 2 1/2Ba, 1900 sq ft) and we live in a mediocre neighborhood and you really can't get anything in our neighborhood for under $195,000. Maybe if you went out to the suburbs, like Cedar Park or Buda, but not actually in the city.
  • I don't know where they were in Denver to get that because no good area in the city would have that big of a house for that money...or they were way out in the burbs (which is what I suspect).  In my zip all it would get you is a 800SF 2bd/1ba half a duplex.  I was amazed how comparable most of the homes were...but immediate area makes a HUGE difference in price even w/in a city.

  • We got our house for 127,900 and we love it. It's 3br 1ba, living room dining room, huge eat in kitchen, full basement with bathroom hookup and huge finished rec room. We could get something amazing for that price here.

I live in Ohio too and it's an excellent place for the cost of living.  Everything is so cheap, including the houses.

Yeah, check out Seattle Sad. And I live East of the lake, which is worse! The alternative would be a b!tch of a commute, though.

  • Interesting but so inaccurate. I live in DC and you can't get crap or under $300K. On the site they show a 3 bedroom rowhouse for $180k. I can guarantee that place is in a not no nice or safe area and needs major renovations.

  • It would get me either a nice condo (what we have now), or a 2br/1ba house that needs a TON of work.

Agreed. You couldn't even buy a 1 bedroom condo for that here.

I live in Ohio too and its great for house prices. Around here for that price you would get probably a 4 br, 2-3 ba, basement, 2 car garage, updated house in the nice part of town. I have a 3 br 2 ba  that needed a little work and spent a fraction of $174,900.
