2nd Trimester

Can't hear the heartbeat (but it's all good)

I went in today and again we tried to hear the heartbeat through doppler... and again couldn't hear it. We tried to hear it a few weeks ago, and didn't, so had an ultrasound and there was the baby, jumping and dancing around. I'm not concerned now, I'm thinking I have a child who refuses to cooperate Big Smile but I'm wondering if anyone else has had to wait a long time before hearing the heartbeat?

  • I finally heard it for the first time at 15 weeks!  (not sure if my tilted uterus had something to do with that ...)

  • I just posted about having trouble with my at home doppler.

I finally found it but it was clear down by my crotch and way to the left...

  • It's still early.  I'm surprised that your doctor tried a couple weeks ago.  Mine doesn't try until after 12 weeks.  I'm sure you'll hear it at your next appointment.
  • I still haven't heard the heartbeat. We've seen the baby on ultrasound several times and he was the same... jumping and bouncing around. He also won't cooperate. Its all good since we've seen him on the ultrasound but I was so worried too.

  • they weren't able to hear mine at my first appointment with the doppler but my doctor is awesome and did a quickie ultrasound so we could see it (thank goodness, i would have worried myself sick)! finally got to actually hear it at my first trimester screening this past wednesday, which was amazing.  we also have a stubborn baby who likes to jump and dance around so it's hard for the ultrasound tech to do their measurements, lol :) i'm glad you got to see that everything is well! it's such a reassuring feeling!

  • We heard ours at my 16 week appt. Before that we did quick ultrasounds just to double check, and it was always totally fine. My dr. said it's usually very difficult to find it externally before 15 weeks, but sometimes you get lucky.

  • They couldn't find our HB for a while but soon found it really low...give it time!  It is good though that you were able to get an ultra sound so soon!  We aren't scheduled for one until 20 wks! Good Luck!
  • i'm 14 weeks and they hadn't been able to hear at all so he does an u/s hopefully we can hear on the 24th but doc say it's better to see
  • The doctor tried to hear the heartbeat with the Doppler when I was 14 weeks, and my heart beat was too strong so he couldn't hear anything else. Had an ultrasound a few weeks later and saw the baby moving around lots, everything was good. Had a doctors appt at 18 weeks, and the doctor still had trouble finding the heartbeat, but did find it. I heard that stomach fat or an anterior placenta can make it more difficult to hear the heartbeat. If your doctor isn't worried, try not to freak out.. That is my experience. :)
