My Dr office is making me crazy

The dr was  supposed to refer me to someone to talk about diabeties stuff and a high risk dr on  Monday.  No one has contacted me so I just called them to follow up. They give me the number for the high risk dr and I called them.  the high risk dr recieved a very specific referal that will not be done untill the 20th week ( Jan.). They also do not do diabeties in their office.

So I call my dr office back and they keep putting me on hold. Then they tell me they will call me back.

If I am supposed to manage this diabeties stuff someone needs to teach me how. If I am so high risk why are they giving me the run around?

Re: My Dr office is making me crazy

  • I'm sorry Mary!  I know the advice from the Dr. is best, but if you have any questions feel free to ask.  I went through a diabetic pregnancy.
  • Keep bugging them. It sounds like no one knows what is going on. Good luck!

  • I'm sorry.  Do you mind my asking if you were diabetic pre-pregnancy, I only ask since you seem early to have taken the GD test.  It sounds to me like the referral for the MFM is for your Big ultrasound, which is also when I say the perinatologist eventhough it was known I was high risk from the start.  The MFM office won't address GD but if you are diabetic to begin with that may be different, for GD I was referred to a GD clinic of sorts run by our local hospital, met with a nutritionist and was giving a program to follow.
  • I just called them again. I am feeling like a royal pest but they have promised now that the dr is going to call me back.

teambaumer I wish I even knew where to start with questions. My mom is also diabetic and MIL is too but reg diabetic. They both want me to get a meter and start checking numbers. This i am ready to do but I do not have a meter. I also am not really clear on how to interperit the numbers. Carol (MIL) has me eating only meat and veggies. I do feel a little more peppy so that must be a good thing.

Hopefully the dr will call back soon and get moving on stuff. I am just annoyed because they were supposed to refer me on Monday. It is Friday and I will be lucky if things get taken care of by the end of the day.

GD is different from Type1 and Type2 Diabetes...it is managed differently and the numbers are different.  You are still needing to eat carbohydrates (besides the ones you get from veggies).

They do typically have you get a meter and test yourself (fasting bs, after breakfast, after lunch, after dinner, some have you do it after snacks too).  They will most likely put you on the 6 "meals" a day...it is more like 3 small meals and 3 large snacks (I say large because in my opinion light yogurt, plus slice of bread, with a lean meat (or other protein) seems like a big snack).

This is very general information based on what is stereotypical of treating GD, your specific care provider might have you managed differently or with variations to this.

Something to temporarily help you until you can see a professional...abstain from dairy products and fruit at breakfast, aim for whole grain bread and eggs...peanut butter, etc.  Milk and fruit can put you over really fast in the mornings when your hormone levels are at their peak.  Starting with a snack about 2 hours after your breakfast...then you can add a fruit OR dairy and a grain with protein...lunch you can have both fruit, dairy, veggie, grain, protein, your after lunch snack is a good time to have a grain, protein and dairy and a veggie...some say fruit is OK, some say no...dinner is like lunch, and after dinner snack is like the one after breakfast.

I would request to see a dietitian too...they can really help you with portion sizes, probably even give you a listing of ideas and what you can have at each meal and they can tell you how many carbs they want you to consume with each meal.

I am on a 30, 30, 40, 30, 40, 30.  One of my gf's who also has GD is on a 30, 30, 50, 45, 60, 30.  Different people can have different plans.  It all depends upon your numbers.  It will take a few days to weeks to get the hang of it and know what your body can handle and at what times of the day.

email me if you want any more information, but know that I can only supply meal information based off of MY plan...so yours could be different.

  • One thing that helped me a lot too was my insurance.  We have anthem blue cross and they have a pregnancy program where they check on you monthly and are available any time for questions.  Check to see if your insurance has a wellness program.
  • Oh, and don't be affraid to be a pest!  It is your body and you will only be comfortable with the right answers.
  • Wow PKW that was helpful.  I am having a snack right now with some whole grain crackers. I dont mind eating often that actually makes a lot of sense.

Teambaumer thanks for the encouragement. I have given them a few hours to get back to me. I think I am going to call again after 1:00 as they are closed for lunch right now. My job today is to get them to do 2 referals. THe GD specialist and the ultra sound. I really want to do an ultra sound before thanksgiving. The dr said she was forgoing the one in her office because I was going to be refered very soon to get it at the high risk dr. They should do both of those for me.

I am guessing I am on my own for the weekend so I am making food plans for the weekend. We are having a bunch of people over for a murder mystery thing and pasta tomorrow. I am working on small meals and some appetizers for the party that I can work into a snack. Maybe some deviled eggs. I may just have to eat a little different dinner than everyone else. Or maybe just a really small amount of pasta.

  • Pasta is not as bad as you would think.  Just have it as a side...so serve yourself a portion that is slightly larger than say a side of rice or mashed potatoes. Then add a salad (with either a balsamic vinagarette or ranch, I LOVE the paul newman's light balsamic vinagerette and I put a small amount of that on with some balsamic vinegar dashed over too) and forego the bread.  Pasta with red sauce is less carbs than cream sauce.

Eat it with something filling like a serving of milk. Lowfat or nonfat.

I find that milk is a good option for me at dinner because it helps fill me up and so I don't feel the need to a second helping.

Yoplait light yogurts are awesome...they are filling and they are the right amount of carbs.  I love the banana strawberry and boston cream pie...it also feels like I am having dessert...so I will have the boston cream pie or banana cream pie or something like that with my after dinner snack...

  • and make sure you get some cheese on that pasta!!!  It is awesome for taste (who doesn't love cheese???) and it is a good protein!

Oh...and walk!  Moving your legs is going to be the fastest way for you to burn up the glucose in your system.  Your legs have some of the most powerful and useful muscles in your body and your muscles are what burn glucose...so stand up....move around after a meal.  DH and I go for a 15-20 minute walk after meals...if you are worried you might have gone a little over...walk for 20-30 minutes.  You would be shocked at how quickly that can drop your BS.
