I want to add beans to my 1yr old's diet so she can have more protein. If you give your DC beans, how do you prepare them? or do you buy prepared? do they have organic beans?
We get no salt added canned beans. They're generally just added to other foods. Sometimes I puree them and make a paste for quesadillas. DS currently hates beans right now, so we haven't had them for a while.
Eden Organic is one brand of organic canned beans, and the can liners are BPA-free. I haven't given them to DS, but we've used them ourselves. I have to say that the beans are a bit on the bland side. They are even more bland than other low-sodium canned beans I've used, so these must be really low-sodium (Beans cooked from dried beans can be pretty bland, too, though, if you aren't cooking them with a pork product or something else to season them, and starting with dried beans takes a while - possibly more time than it's worth for the amount your daughter would eat.)
My son LOVES beans: black beans, garbanzo beans, lentils, red beans...
I usually just buy canned organic, give him about an ounce with other stuff, freeze the rest for future use (in individual portions). I also make lentil soup and puree it for him - it's really easy:
sautee 1/2 onion and a bunch of carrots, sliced, in olive oil
add water (8-10 cups)
add 2 c. dried lentils ( I use the green/french ones)
pinch of salt
bring to a boil then reduce to simmer and cook for about 45 minutes to an hour, until lentils are done
Re: beans
When can kids start eating beans? Is 9mo to early?
I was wondering this the other day...
I think DS had refried beans at around 8 months? Wholesomebabyfood.com recommends 8-10 months.
thanks! i need to get this girl started on beans!
