Parenting after a Loss

stressed out...what do we do??

I am getting off of DH's insurance come November because it's $450 a month for me to be on it... (they have a small group plan at their firm)...if we added Kate to that plan it would be another $400 a month. INSANE! So we applied for new insurance (for just kate and I)... I was approved and they denied Kate because of her infection. Ahhh, they said she has to be healthy at least 3 months before they could approve her. I am so stressed out. What in the world are we supposed to do? We CAN add her to DH's insurance but its an HMO and our new pedi doesnt accept it. Im about to have a little breakdown with all the stress that is in my life right now between kate's infection, my precious grandpa having surgery tomorrow to remove cancer and now this! Anyone else deal with insurance crap?

  • I don't have any advice but I am so sorry you're dealing with all of this!  Insurance companies suck.

I hope everything goes well with your grandpa tomorrow.

  • I am so sorry you have to deal with that - insurance issues stink!  My advice would be to get her insurance anyway you can.  When you have a break in coverage, it opens the door for insurance companies being able to claim "pre-existing conditions " in the future and denying coverage (legally even if you change insurance but have never had a break in coverage, they can't use that excuse).  Plus, with a child, I don't think its ever a good idea to go insurance-less.  Shop around for other short term insurance her pedi will take or at the very least just pay on DH's plan in order to have her covered for any major issue that could arise.

  • I agree with PP about just making sure she has some type of coverage in the meantime. I am so sorry you are going through all of this. I can barely hold it together with the normal new Mom stuff, let alone adding all you are experiencing. Hang in there!!

  • Insurance is such crap....we're putting up with insane costs too, and we have no other options. DS is healthy thank goodness but there are no other choices in RI.
  • I am so sorry you are dealing with insurane issues.... they are the worst.

You may want to check if your state offers insurance plans for children. I know NJ & PA offer different types of insurances for children; regardsless on of income.

  • Look into state programs for her.

And definitely have some coverage for her.  When I think of how l&d and LO's 15 days in hospital was well over $100k, yet all we are paying is $1500, it really reinforces how important it is to have coverage.

  • Ugh, that is such crap!  I agree with the pp who said look into a short term insurance plan.  I had to do that for myself when I changed jobs a few years ago and it was relatively inexpensive.  Not sure how great the coverage was, b/c thankfully I didn't have to use it, but it would be worth looking into.  Good luck!
