Natural cough syrup for <1 year old

I know I don't need this yet, but I'm curious.  I've been using lemon juice and honey for my sore throats/cough the past few months, but of course that's a no go for Atticus until he is older.

When the time comes, what would be a good natural remedy for him to take?

Re: Natural cough syrup for <1 year old

  • maybe elderberry syrup?  although i don't think i would give to a baby under 6 months.  there's also some teas you could probably do diluted with licorice and marshmallow, but again you would have to check with an herbalist and make sure they're safe for under 1 year.

  • Lots of people give chamomile tea for colic, so that would be an option (without the honey, of course).

  • I saw this article this past week and I knew it had something about a cough for young ones.  Here's what they say.  Here's the link and I copied the text about the cough remedies below.

A cough is an effort by the body to rid itself of mucous and /or pathogens. It is not always beneficial to suppress a cough because you want the mucous to move up and out. But, if it is causing decreased sleep or irritation, you may need to soothe the cough.

    Kitchen Remedies

    • Sage Tea calms a cough
    • Thyme and Anise Seed makes a great tea for a wet, productive cough to help move the mucous out. 1/2 tsp. each in 2 cups of boiling water. Steep 20 minutes. Kids can drink up to 1 cup, 3 times a day.
    • Onion Syrup (See Above Recipe)
    • Prop the head up on pillow if the cough is worse at night. This will help the mucous drain more effectively.

    Other Herbs / Teas

    • Licorice Sticks (See Above Recipe), Plantain Leaf (Plantago major, P. minor), Mullein leaf and flower (Verbascum thapsus), and Marshmallow Root (Althea officinalis) are wonderful for a dry cough.
    • Elecampane Root (Inula helenium), Wild Cherry Bark (Prunus serotina), and Hyssop leaf (Hyssopus oficinalis) are wonderful for a wet cough.
