Trying to Get Pregnant

Tests before Clomid

I've been to my ob/gyn several times in the past few weeks for testing-- my TSH came back high, but otherwise levels have been normal. Progesterone test came back at 0.79, so my doc wants me to chart another cycle, come in for the P4 bloodwork again, then she wants to start Clomid after that.

For ladies taking Clomid, what tests did you have done before you started it?

I haven't had an HSG or any ultrasounds yet & DH hasn't even done an SA. Did you have these things done before you started Clomid? I'm a little hesistant to start taking it without any additional tests first.

I would at very least get an HSG done and an SA. If there are problems there, you are putting yourself on powerful drugs that aren't going to fix the problem.

    My thoughts exactly!

  • Just out of curiosity (and if you don't mind sharing) what was your TSH at?  Are they going to put you on Synthroid?  (I only ask b/c that happened to me, and I'm now on Synthroid trying to find the right dosage...)

Anyway, we're meeting with the RE Monday to talk about our path forward, but we're looking to start IUI in January (possibly on Clomid at that point as well).  However we've had the full load of tests done.  DH has had 2 SA's, I've had an HSG, cd3 b/w and u/s, etc.  I'd definitely want to get everything checked out I can before I start taking a drug like that!

    Good luck to you!

It took 44 cycles, just over 3 years, 6 failed IUI's in MI, and 1 round of IVF at CCRM to get our BFP!

    Beta #1 (9dp5dt) = 206, Beta #2 (11dp5dt) = 438
    1st u/s @ 6w5d = 11/11/11 = ONE little bean! HB 120bpm!

My TSH was 5.51 two weeks ago, but they retested it on Monday and it came back at 3.379. I'm not sure how it changed so much in a few weeks?

I've read that some labs consider up to 5.5 "normal" and some use a standard of 3.0 as "normal." The conversation with the nurse today lead me to believe that they weren't going to do anything, as far as meds. I was suprised, as I thought maybe this was the explanation for not ovulating.

If you don't mind me asking, what was your level?

  • I had suspected endo (now confirmed), so I had pretty much everything including Lap surgery done before Clomid.

If you don't mind me asking, what was your level?

Nope, not at all!  When I first got my TSH tested in May, it was a 3.64. My OB considers "normal range" to be anywhere from  0.50-5.50.  When I went to the RE over the summer, he said that they consider anything over 3 to be high, and like to see the TSH at or below 2.5 for women TTC.

So I had more b/w done, and my TSH came back at 5.02.  (How it changes that much in a couple months, I have no idea!)  So my RE put me on 50 mcg of Synthroid.

Went in a month later to see what the meds were doing, and my TSH came back at 0.214 which they considered to be too low.  They wanted me to come back in 2 weeks for a repeat test to see if it was just a fluke or something I guess.

Nope, 2 weeks later it had dropped to a 0.023.  So they had me cut my pills in half and I'm now taking 25 mcg of Synthroid a day which is the lowest dose they can prescribe.  I go back mid-November for more b/w to see what's going on.

They did tell me that when your TSH is too high, it can prevent a pregnancy from happening...as well as cause early miscarriage if you do happen to get pregnant.  So I'm happy that we're working on adjusting it, it's just frustrating when it seems like my levels are jumping all over the place!

My RE office policy is 3 cycles of Clomid + TI before HSG or SA, unless something in the b/w or u/s seeems suspicious.  They feel that intrusive testing, that may or may not be covered by insurance, to identify problems that are very uncommon, isn't necessary upfront.

I had b/w and u/s on my first RE visit, then another u/s on CD 2 (this past Tuesday), and go in for another u/s on CD 14... and then will go in for more b/w & u/s @ 7DPO to make sure I ovulated.
