Preemies

lemen

Hi! Congrats on the synagis approval!! :)

So we went to the pedi today because I was fed up with all A's feeding issues. She  has been getting worse and has a constant gurgle in her throat. Not to mention she isn't eating nearly as much as what the pedi wants. They are starting her on Zantac 2x per day and she is going for a swallow study at St. V's. How did your A do with the swallow study? Is there anything scary or painful I should begin to prepare myself for? The nurse is supposed to call me tomorrow once they set it up.

  • Hey! Thanks!

Well I hope the Zantac helps!

our SS was at St V too.  Really it was a breeze.  They let us feed him. He just sat upright in a chair in front of the xray equipement.  They mix Barium/dye in his food so that they can see it on the xray.  Andrew had eaten Barium in his food a few times before - maybe not idea but they tell us it's safe.  Don't be alarmed if her poop is really weird for a couple days after!

I do have some advice for you.  I don't know if you doctor will do this, but, I wish we had thought of it.  A swallow study is the same thing as an upper GI, except for the location of the camera.  It's the same exact test, it's just a matter of what they observe.  If you're taking the time to go to the hospital and set it all up, they might as well do an upper GI at the same time.  upper Gi can look at the reflux too - swallow study can't.  Your doctor may order both at once so you're sort of getting 2 birds with one stone.  I don't know if she'll do that without a specific reason to, but I think by default they should just do both :)
