2nd Trimester

Here's some perspective: chances of dying from swine flu

Changes of dying from swine flu: 1 in 2,222,222

Odds of fatally slipping in bath or shower: 1 in 2,232

Odds of injury from fireworks: 1 in 19,556

Odds of being killed sometime in the next year in any sort of transportation accident: 1 in 77

Odds of being murdered: 1 in 18,000

Odds of being on plane with a drunken pilot: 1 in 117

Chance of dying from any kind of injury during the next year: 1 in 1,820

Chance of dying from intentional self-harm: 1 in 9,380

Chance of dying from any kind of fall: 1 in 20,666

Chance of dying from accidental drowning: 1 in 79,065

Chance of dying from exposure to smoke, fire, and flames: 1 in 81,524

Chance of dying in an explosion: 1 in 107,787

Odds of getting hemorrhoids: 25 to 1

Chance of having a stroke: 1 in 6

Odds are, before you ever get a chance to catch that piggy virus, you will first get hemorrhoids, have a stroke, commit suicide, be murdered, slip in the shower, blow yourself up with fireworks, crash your car, and burn to death. Unfortunately, if you?ve had all that stuff, and then had H1N1, you?re going to die from a dog bite (1 in 700,000).

  • 1 in 117 chance of being in a plane with a drunk pilot? Who comes up with these stats? A person who checked the cockpit on every flight they've ever taken and finally on the 117th flight found the pilot to be drunk? jeeze louise!..... LMAO good one!

  • Maybe, but what are the statistics for pg women only?  I bet the swine flu numbers change quite a bit.

  • You don't have to die from Swine for it to really suck for you. There are a ton of other things the flu causes that I'd rather steer clear of too.  For example, I'd prefer to stay out of the ICU hooked up to a ventilator, thanks.
  • Note, this is not the odds of a pregnant women dying from the H1N1, its a normal person, nor does it show the odds of her fetus dying if she contracts H1N1.  Pregnant women make up 1% of the population, but 6% of the H1N1 deaths.  Your chances are a lot off that what is written.

  • Fair enough, but you can't get vaccinated against fireworks.
  • That is a small risk when you look at it that way, but I still decided to get the vaccine...The main reason for doing so is that my Dr. convinced me that my baby will have some sort of immunity to the flu once he is born because I got it, and not to mention that I am asthmatic and have an even greater risk of developing severe complications if I contracted the flu. But everyone needs to educate themselves and decide whats best for them.

    LMFAO Yes

I think the firework statistic came from down here in TX anyway...I've probably encountered a hundred people who have been involved in some kind of serious fireworks accident.  Sad, lol.

  • Do these "stats" take into account death by complications resulting from the flu (think pneumonia and other illnesses) or just death by the flu itself?
  • Here's some more "perspective"...

I have a friend whose boyfriend is currently in the ICU in a medical-induced COMA and pneumonia in BOTH LUNGS all because of the swine flu.  And he's not even pregnant (obviously).

So if THIS can happen so close to home for me, I'd rather not!   I can't imagine what would happen to my LO if they had to put me in a medically induced coma!   NO THANX!

i may not fully understand statistics, and i swear i'm not trying to stir it up more, but wouldn't that mean that 94% of the people dying from swine flu are NOT pregnant?

  • I get your 'point', but I think everyone is concerned about the fact that this flu is the only strand known to directly attack the placenta, causing brain damage in deformities in my unborn child....  this is why I will get the shot, not fear of death from it.  Not really a laughing matter IMHO, but whatever.

Yes it does, I see your point.  However, I haven't heard any stats on the number of fetus lost as a result of the H1N1.  Also, I guess it would make pregnant women 6 times more likely to die from H1N1 than a normal person.  I'm not that great at math so correct me if I am wrong.  No worries on stirring it up, I like a good debate.

  • I don't understand how they can accurately estimate a chance of dying from swine flu at this point. This strain has only existed since last spring and we haven't even been through a full flu season yet -- so we don't know yet how many people have or will get it, and how many people will die from it.

I can see where they would have that kind of statistic on the regular flu and it would be reasonably accurate based on many flu seasons.

Also, just an FYI -- if you're pregnant, you're about six times more likely to die of swine flu than anyone else who gets it. (Based on the CDC figures that 1% of the population is pregnant and 6-7% of all swine flu deaths have been pregnant women.)

    Ditto, Red!

  • That's not going to comfort my friend Niki, whose healthy 10 yr old has been in the ICU on an ECOM machine (lung bypass machine) for 3 weeks with complications from this flu. He has just this week been reduced down to 5% usage of the machine so he is on his way back up after being told he only had 30% chance of survival. That's my perspective. I know the odds but it can happen.
