**MoroccoJade** and anyone else that can help :)

HI! How are you? I keep getting monthly emails from the accupuncture place you recommended and think of you! Hope everything is going well.

I need some advice (again! lol) and hope you'll see this here. Here goes (RP from toddler board):

I had no intention of even trying to potty train Jayden now, as he is only just almost 16 months old and I thought it was way too early. Apparantely, DS has a different plan! The past few days he has been asking us to use the potty (by running into the bathroom and pointing to the potty, pulling on his diaper so I'll take it off, etc). Every single time he asks, we put him on the potty, and he pees. I am still shocked, but I guess he's ready to start?

So obviously I've never potty trained a LO before, lol. Any tips? Should I get him pull ups and really encourage this? I don't expect him to get fully potty trained, and don't want to push him either...but if he's ready, I don't want to hinder him either... help?

  • Go for it if he's interested!!!!  I would suggest doing either pull ups or undies with plastic training pants.

Good for him!  My 27 month old still isn't interested!

  • That's great that he's doing it all on his own!!  I would definitely encourage it and maybe take him shopping for some fun undies.  I haven't had personal experinece but my mom said I was ready around 1.5 years- wanting to go potty and wear panties so she transitioned straight to underwear, no pull ups.  GL!

  • Hellooooooooo!  Nice to 'see' you.  I can't believe you're so far along in your second pregnancy already.  Time flies!  you must be so excited.  :)  Any gender hunches yet?

As for J...  By all means, keep doing what you're doing.  And like the others said, skip the pull ups.  Let him pick out some fancy, 'manly' underwear that he adores.  And yes, really encourage it.  Why not?  It's great.  You won't miss diapers.  Most countries of the world PT their kids by a year, 18 months at the latest.  Even in N. America the average age to be PT was 18 months - and that was only 30-40 years ago.  Pampers/Huggies et al have us convinced that modern kids can't be PT till they're in grade 7.  Baloney.

So yes, keep taking him when he asks.  Then also nicely remind him at strategic times.  Upon waking, after eating, after he's in the stroller/carrier/car seat, before his bath.  You'll be surprised at how much success you'll have.  If you miss a few, no big deal.  Deal with them matter of factly.  "Oh look.  You peed your pants.  Let's get dry ones on you and wipe the floor."  These little mishaps are how he'll learn.  Get some cleaner from the pet store in case of a little something getting on your carpet.

Definitely get him while he's hot!  This sounds like a wonderful window of opportunity.  Don't miss out.  Fighting with a 4 year old to stop going in his/her pants sounds like a nightmare to me.   He's not a 'power struggle' stage with regard to this sort of thing yet -- which is great.  Take full advantage.  By the time #2 comes, I bet he'll have been out of diapers for a while.  :)  Fabulous boy you have!

    Don't be a stranger.  xo
