Pregnant after a Loss

Diarrhea Questions (TMI?)

Okay, sorry if this grosses anybody out. It grossed me out, believe me. But I know constipation is pretty normal in pregnancy. Well this morning I woke up with the opposite problem. It was so bad I had to RUN down the stairs to make it to the bathroom in time, and I'm feeling pretty nauseaous too. But I had a few questions...

1. Am I right in assuming that if constipation is normal, diarrhea is NOT?

2. I know being constipated is your body's way of making sure it gets all the nutrients it can out of the food for you and the baby. Could there be something wrong, to where, God forbid, I no longer need all the nutrients?

3. In the same general idea as the last question, is having diarrhea more  dangerous now that I am pregnant? I think it can dehydrate you, and I'm guessing if the food goes through your system that quickly you dont get all the nutrients. Is that something to freak out over?

4. Could something I ate be the cause. I was craving reubens last night so I made a few, but Im worried that that may have been a stupid thing to do. I was reading about what you arent supposed to eat while KU and deli meat is on the list. Could corned beef cause this? I feel like Im going out on a limb with this b/c I ate ruebens the other day and I felt fine. But my greatgrandmothers theory is that I went to sleep before giving my body a chance to digest the food. Could either of us be right?

Sorry if these are really stupid questions, it just worried me really bad. I wouldve posted this earlier, but I couldnt climb the stairs back to the computer. I wound up having to a few hours later though, because my phone and vitamins and stuff were up there. I keep them with me at all times, I just didnt have time to grab them this morning when I went flying down the steps.

NOPE.

Re: Diarrhea Questions (TMI?)

  • eek, sorry to hear about your GI issues. not pleasant, i know. and i know because for some reason, when i get ku, i occasionally have major potty attacks-- gotta go and gotta go NOW.

everyone's body reacts differently to pregnancy. i don't think you have to assume having an episode of diarrhea is "not normal." it could have been due to something you ate, drank... or just hormones.

if it continues, i'd talk to a doctor about it. but otherwise, i wouldn't stress too much about it.

  • I had the same problem for about 2 weeks after my BFP.  The issue has corrected itself and I am now slightly constipated.

If you're worried about dehydration I would contact your doctor.  Otherwise, give it a few days and see if it works itself out.

  • If it makes you feel better, I had diarrhea as a symptom for the entire 1st trimester!  I asked both me RE and then OB about it and was told that some woman will react to pregnancy in this way - it is a form of m/s for some.  It finally went away around 14 weeks and I have had normal bowel movements ever since.  No constipation what so ever.  My RE did say that diarrhea is only an issue/problem if you get it more than once a day - because in that case you are not keeping in the nutrients you need for baby.  Personally, I am glad I had diarrhea over vomiting... I have yet to vomit once.

  • With my first two pgs I was very constipated. With this one I had diarrhea too! So weird. It was about 2 weeks after I got my BFP. Now it's stopped, I'm not constipated but I go to the bathroom every day.
