So let's say I wanted to start running...

where do I start?

I should probably get some decent shoes, right?

You guys have inspired me to give this a try!

Re: So let's say I wanted to start running...

  • If you aren't a "natural runner" try the Couch to 5k program!

  • Shoes are VERY important, in fact, I just went out tonight and got a new pair of running shoes and plan to get back into jogging/running this weekend.

My old running shoes were getting uncomfortable and were hurting my feet...so when I went for my walks/jogs, I would get really sore quick and wouldn't want to continue with my routine.

I'm really excited about getting back into it. You should totally do it - YOU CAN DO IT!!

  • Shoes are probably the most important. I'd hit up FeetFleet or RoadRunner, they'll look at your feet, watch you run and make a recommendation for a shoe and other products.

As far as training, if you can just go out and start running thats great! Me... I need a plan. I started the couchto5k. Great program, starts you off slow and easy and now I run 2-3 miles easily.

It makes running seem very doable. =)

Good luck to you!  So many girls running now.. we should have a running GTG!

  • Ditto pps on getting fitted for proper running shoes. They make a world of difference! I also highly recommend couch to 5K. And most importantly, have fun!!
  • ditto shoes being super important! I made the mistake of trying to train without proper footwear and now I'm wearing a big @ss fancy boot for a stress fracture.

Ditto pp suggestion for the couch 2 5k program!

  • Both Road Runners and Fleet Feet will fit you; however, Road Runners seems to have a more thorough, technological approach. Fleet Feet in Pleasant Hill just watched me walk and jog. Road Runners got me up on a treadmill, video taped me running, had me step on a compter graphic board for my arch...spent 30 minutes fitting me. Talking to me. I feel like I got a much better shoe/fit there and the shoes are a lot cheaper.

Shoes are super duper important as is not trying to do too much too soon. Couch to 5k is awesome!! GL!!

I'd love to run with you sometime.

  • Yay for running!!  I agree with the pp re proper shoes being number one.

    {Let me know if you have any questions about staring up or tailoring a specific running program to fit you.  I don't talk about it a lot but I am running coach for women of all levels.}

  • Shoes and ditto couch to 5k.  It's best to get fitted for your shoes and buy them 1/2 a size larger than daily shoes.
  • I know shoes are quite important, but I am one of those people that didn't get fitted for anything and have been fine - I started running again about WOW, I guess it was 10 years ago! And, you are supposed to change your shoes every so many miles and I also don't do that. I've had the same pair of running shoes for the last 4 years, I think. I used to average about 12 miles a week, I'm lucky if I get 6 now.

I just did what felt comfortable in the beginning. I'd jog/run however long I could without feeling like I was going to pass out, or however long I wanted to. Sometimes I ran the whole way, sometimes I walked most of it. For me, a program wouldn't make it fun. It's my stress release, my ME time, and I needed freedom to enjoy that time. I only do about 3 miles when I run now, I just listen to my music and enjoy myself.

  • You got some good advice.

I just wanted to say YAY!  and good luck!!

  • Ditto pps. Shoes are important,  but so is the right sports bra!

Since my girls are big, I need to hold them in place.

    GL!!

  • Ditto on getting a pair of running shoes (a pair specifically for running so you get support in the right places), and a good sports bra.

Another suggestion for ways to get started: if you belong to a gym look into whether they offer group running classes (on a treadmill). You go at your own pace and having an instructor and other people running along side you is kind of fun and motivational. Otherwise, just find a nice route nearby and get out there :)
