Trying to Get Pregnant

Tell me about your...

countertops!  Our cabinets are done, finally!  Now on to purchasing countertops.  I'm leaning towards the solid surface or quartz.  What do you have and why do you love/hate them???

Re: Tell me about your...

  • I'm getting granite counter tops, but we got an incredible deal.  However, we have to get cabinets first and that's kind of pricey.

  • I work in the home decor field. Quartz is great but it does scratch easy. Granite prices have dropped, especially granite tile, so you can find some granite for the same price as Quartz these days.

Yeah, the prices are about the same.  The reason I don't want granite is because it seems like it's higher maintenance and requires a bit more upkeep.  If this isn't the case though, I would keep granite on the list.

I didn't realize Quartz scratched easliy.  Good to know.  What about Silestone?  I've heard only great things about it.

  • Our countertops are granite. I love them because I can cut food right on top of them - not sure if I am supposed to do this but I do keep everything super clean.
  • We have granite ( they we already installed when we bought our place). I love them ! I honestly cannot think of a single negative thing to say about them.

  • Counters are on our to-do list:  we like granite.  DH is interested in granite tile.  I am also interested in silestone (antimicrobial I think).

Silestone is similar to Quartz and does scratch pretty easy too. It's a bit more pourous so if you go with a lighter color you have to be careful with red wine stains etc.  All require sealing upkeep and special cleaners. I'd advise going to a granitle/tile store or a specialty flooring retailer. Most of them also sell countertops and can give you all sorts of great info and find out more about your use and help get you the right product. GL.

  • Great, thanks ladies!
  • We have granite and I love them.  If properly treated and sealed, you can put hot pots on them, cut right on them (not that I do) and they are not sensitive at all.  The mutli-colored surface also hides dirt well, and they look fantastic.

  • We put Silestone in last year and I'm in love. I haven't had any problems with scratching or staining (knock on wood) and I've even cut on them. And they are absolutely beautiful.

Also, we got them from Home Depot - the price was great, we got a huge discount and a free sink (undermounted - I highly recommend undermounting). They did a really good job on the install, too.

  • Mmmm... granite.  Expensive, but they are gorgeous!
